My child ate donuts for dinner last night and pretty much nothing else. He was too overwhelmed to eat with 20 people around the table. We served homemade donuts for dessert for Hanukkah. Tyler probably ate 10.
I realized when I got to work that the shirt I am wearing is very low cut. Since I have huge boobs now (well.. relatively huge) it looks kind of indecent. I can't put my cardigan on because I am having the warm sweats. Oh well. There aren't many people around the office.

I drank a little too much wine last night. I would like to combat the slog hangover with a beer, but I am just about to get in the car and drive. I am thinking of skipping the mall and having a beer instead.
I have a good one. I am having a really hard time getting behind the hatred of stores being open on Thanksgiving. I don't think it is cool to FORCE someone to work on a holiday but if a company asks for volunteers, I don't see the issue. I am not naive so I know there are stores that do make people work but I just don't have hatred towards them for it. I wont compare emergency service personnel but I will compare bartenders and food serves, who also have to work. People are not raging against the restaurants that are always open.
Don't get me wrong, I really don't that it is necessary for stores to be open on the holiday, but the comments I read on facebook about how people have lost their values seem to be extreme to me.

Companies typically don't ask for volunteers, they make it mandatory to work. What reason does Walmart/Target/Best Buy have to be open all day on Thankgiving? What is so pressing that it has to be purchased on that.day?
I'm not a fan of restaurants being open at all, and I'll boycott both equally.
Myself too and I don't see the need to shop on the holiday, I really don't. I just don't get the OUTRAGE. I guess I kind of feel like, what did we all expect would happen when we live in such a materialistic, capitalistic society? Honestly, I am just not surprised - maybe that is why I don't feel outraged - I am just not at all surprised by it.
I think stores being open on Thansgiving will become the norm, and eventually the outrage will go away since people aren't mad enough to stop shopping. It's really sad.
@therealmc my outrage comes from when I entered retail, stores were not opened on thanksgiving, so I never expected to have to work. When you go into the food industry, you go in knowing working holidays is part of the gig. They changed the rules, and it sucked. At the store I worked at, Only hourly employees were asked to volunteer. Us salaried peeps were assigned shifts, and it was show or lose your job. If there were not enough volunteers from the hourly associates, they were assigned shifts also. The store I worked at did not have enough volunteers. So many people had to work last night against their wishes. Some quit because of that, and that meant people with more seniority had to work. It sucks. ( I still have friends there that call and vent )
I'm leaving H home alone with Owen for 3 nights in a row. Last night I got home at 10:30. Tonight will probably be later (though I'm not leaving until 7:30) and tomorrow I'm gone all night. I kind of don't like it, but at the same time I like that he gets to experience what it's like to do it all.
I have worked Black Friday the past 8 years except this one, (Mostly all at Macys) and was required to be at work around 4am-5am. Last year we all fought for the midnight shift, since we would just go to work already awake and it would fly by because of how busy it was. I would have much preferred to work thanksgiving day at 6 or 7 or 8pm! We eat dinner early, so I wouldn't have missed it. Yes, I would rather stay home, but for me I would greatly prefer to go to work at an earlier time in the evening, even if it was thanksgiving, then to wake up at 3am and hurry to work during the middle of my sleep.
Yeah, I hate stores and restaurants being open. I think also, it depends on how the shifts are scheduled. I think if people are to be asked to work, it should always be done in a way that they have either the afternoon or evening free so they could still at least share a special meal with their families. Also, I can understand restaurants that are serving special Thanksgiving meals staying open. That is serving a purpose for the holiday. And hopefully those servers volunteered to work and will make a nice amount in tips because holiday meals are usually pretty pricey. It sucks for places like Sbucks to be open though. And stores. I personally won't go anywhere on Thanksgiving in protest.

Servers get paid more, but guess who doesn't ever get tipped...the people making the food. MH worked 13 mandatory hours and didnt see a cent of extra money.
When I served at the family style restaurant (yikes that was more than a decade ago), we volunteered and no shift was over 5 hours. I always worked the early 11-4 shift, most people ate early including my family. It was also the most profitable for me. I could easily make $300 in that shift which was like a busy summer day only I had a short shift and served maybe 5-6 tables. People are typically generous to servers on holidays.
I have a friend who has mandatory 12 hour shifts from Wednesday until Tuesday. There's no overtime, no holiday pay, nothing. She was begging for anyone to help with childcare because she has 2 little ones and is a single mom. What she makes as a salaried employee at Walmart is pathetic but she needs the job.
My employer runs 24 hours but it is healthcare and life or death. Same with other services like police and fire. Cheap tvs can wait a day.
Now of course, I have no problem with online shopping but I probably should as people are working for that.

Same. Love it or hate it Black Friday and holiday shopping are "American". Franklin Roosevelt officially moved Thanksgiving a week earlier to allow for more time to shop between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I don't think people should be trampling each other to death in Wal Mart for Keurig deals but holiday sales inject much needed stimulus into the economy. I'm not a fan of being told when or how to spend my money so while I won't leave the safety of Internet retail I wouldn't deem those that do immoral.
I hate that I feel like we have no spare money to spend. I keep seeing people talking about shopping and buying gifts and whathaveyou. We're not poor, we're not living paycheck to paycheck. But I still feel like I have no right to spend money on anything we don't need. I think it's because I don't bring any money in the house and don't feel like I have the right to spend it. I know it's supposed to be OUR money, not HIS money. But i still feel weird about spending it. The thing is, he gripes about the credit card bill every time it comes in. He still tells me to spend a bit on myself just not go overboard, and the trusts me not to go overboard. But then he bitches and moans, and then I feel bad. I'm totally jealous that some of you ladies can buy big gifts and spend money on sales today. And don't feel bad that I feel jealous or think I want you to stop talking about it.
I don't get outraged if something is open on Thanksgiving. Misery likes company. I work at a hospital setting so...but that being said. There are jobs for my field where I wouldn't have to work holidays. So not all healthcare=working holdiays and weekends.
I am trying to forget about black friday b/c I am so broke. My car stopped starting yesterday. Our dryer stopped heating up four or five days ago. My dog is back up at the vet for her pyometra as we speak. I could easily go on a depressed spiral about all the crap that is seemingly taking a shit on me/us. But I am going to be oblivious and hopefully I can fix something when I get home from work. And hopefully, there is good news about the dog.
We're planning on leaving work a solid 90 minutes early today. My boss is already gone and it's dead in here.
I'm going to use my extra time (which will end up being nearly 2 hours thanks to reduced traffic at this time of day) to hit up Old Navy. I can get behind this whole Canada-doing-Black-Friday business.

I want to add though that companies change all the time and it isn't always fair. At my job an MD has to be present to sign cases out back to the requesting physician and up until 2 months ago, weekends weren't staffed with an MD. We recently hired one that works Wednesday - Sunday. They posted a bulletin that they now expect people to volunteer for Saturday's and Sunday's (you can take a day off during the week or take it as OT) in order to get more cases out. Fair? Hell no but what can we really do about it?
I totally get that. And people have the choice to leave, like I did. But most people don't. And that's why I get angry. Also, last year, the company I worked for pulled some shit and made a statement that we wouldn't open on Thanksgiving to give the employees time for their families. This year, they were all, fuck that, we can make money. Its like they said screw their employees, they don't matter, only money does. I think my rage is centered on one store lol. Plus, give it a year or two, and I will probably get caught up in the BF "fun again."

ugh, that's total bs. Sorry! I think it's horrible for work to be mandatory on the holidays and especially long shifts like that.

Mh wants to take everyone out to dinner tonight to thank them for helping us. The only restaurant around is CrApplebees. I don't think this is going to help my current stomach predicament.

MH gave me his credit card and I confess I spent a little more today than I should have. It was about $100, which isn't too bad, right? Part of it was eating at Panera, which we kinda swore off doing. Whoops
