I understand that some stores have volunteers, often people who want the extra money and/or don't want to be alone on the holidays, and if a store staffed solely with volunteers, that would be something. But there are volunteers and there are "volunteers"--people who are given the choice of not "do you want extra shifts" but "how many extra shifts are you willing to take?"
And I think some people probably feel pressured to volunteer because it looks good on a job review.

I hadn't thought about the safety part. I was thinking today that the internet sales have probably lessened crowds a bit.
As to going to work, yes, and that is an expectation, but I was commenting on the fact that stores rationalize the holiday hours by saying their employees want to work the holidays. I question that claim.

Well, as a Jew, prior to being with H, who is Catholic, I loved working during x-mas. Extra money and gave me something to do!

Yeah, some managers are dummies and don't understand engagement (as in the other thread).

I am glad to hear that some stores did this. I did go to kohls today and my cashier told me that it was a requirement that each employee work on thanksgiving for several hours AND 12 hours on BF. She looked so tired and still had about 8 hours to go.

My SIL works for Walmart. She worked 7-3:30 yesterday, and she said he has to work today in order to get holiday pay for both days. So yeah, she volunteered but not really.
