My husband haaaaates Love It or List It. Mostly I think he thinks David and Hilary are annoying, though.
Property Brothers is so unrealistic, too. They seem to take them to huge, over-the-top houses and then tell them they can have it for half the price if they're willing to renovate, and the end design is never as good as the first house. Oh, and the people on the show always say they want X, Y and Z and DON'T WANT TO RENOVATE! And then they're shocked when Drew tells them the cost of the first house. "Why did you bring us here?!" Hello, have you never seen the show? You agreed to be on Property Brothers! I still watch it, but it's clearly staged.
LOL. Pretty much everthing on HGTV has seemed fake and staged to me for years now. It got so ridiculous that I stopped watching. I like the shows on the DIY network better, even though they are both owned by the same company.

We don't have cable so I don't watch it, but confession: I was emailing with someone from there today. The contacted me. Turns our though, they are probably only interested in our old house renovation, not our new building. Bummer. I wanted some free stuff.
But honestly, I'd LOVE to watch someone build a new modern house instead of a bunch of fake staged stuff about an old renovation.
The thing about Love It or List It is I am still amazed at the home buying process in Canada. I mean people buy houses w/o inspections and then look at Hilary like she is a horrible person when she says things like "Your furnance is recalled." I would think they would be thanking her for finding something that you know, could have potentially hurt their family? Maybe it's all in the bad acting.
Property Brothers is a bunch of crap. They never do the whole house, which the first house is completely move-in ready. No one wants a half done house. Oh and the way they completely disregard curb appeal grates on my nerves. It drives DH batty. I remember there was one episode where the family got into a bidding war and in the end only had enough money to do the kitchen or their sons bedrooms and bathroom. Ummm, yeah no, Jonathan, maybe if you didn't spend like $1200 on WALLPAPER IN A LITTLE BOY'S ROOM, the budget could have given them a new kitchen AND a new bathroom.

That part bothers me so much. I get so annoyed every time they're all (fake) outraged and disappointed. What did you expect to happen?
ETA: And I agree with the PP that it's also frustrating that they only do half of the house. I wonder what these people do with their half finished homes.
I think Income Property is actually pretty good. But I think when Scott says, "Kim has a mortgage of $480k, and pays $1900 a month..." I'm like, "hold the phone..." I'm assuming that's JUST the mortgage/interest payment, not PITI. I imagine property taxes in Ontario can be pretty strong, so even if the mortgage falls to $200/month, they might still be paying $1200+/month out of pocket. Other than that, I don't really see a downside to that show!

with all of the sarah's house version, it would be cool to see a new build in a modern design. closest she even got was a suburb new home build within the options available.
if someone built with your vision and taste (AND approachability), it would be very cool and I would watch it for sure!

It just makes me mad that they assume their audience is stupid and doesn't want to see anything new. Every single person in the last 4 months that has come to my DH's office for a new house wants modern design, not an arts and crafts remake. It is a really interesting switch, and I think it is possibly part of an overall trend. I'm exciting about it because sometime I worry about our reluctance to innovate/move forward as a country.
I hate when the owners get mad when Hillary finds a problem. Especially when the problem was detectable (e.g., your roof is leaking).
There was one Love it Or List it where the wife was adament about removing the first floor bathroom to increase the size of the kitchen. Her husband, a realtor, tried to explain how crazy that would be.
Oh did you see the one where the couple got super defensive about their request for a big shower, rather than a tub? And Hillary insisted they should have a tub for bathing their children -- the couple took it as an afront to their parenting.

*I* thought that was crazy too! She just wanted the first floor to be one big room, but who wouldn't want an extra bathroom and/or a toilet on every floor?

THIS is what I'd watch on HGTV.
I fell out of love with that channel a long time ago and I never watch it anymore.

My "favorite" was the one where hillary told them that their deck had been built without permits and was totally unsafe and they acted like she personally had come in the night and sawed off the supports or something.
I want to play HGTV Drinking Bingo. How many squares are in a bingo card? 25? I'm thinking:
There's wiring/plumbing in this wall! this wall is structural! We can't move this HVAC! NO laundry room/bathroom/eat in kitchen/office for you! We're over budget. Homeowner saves the day with parents money!! Crying Homeowner But that wallpaper/paint/granite/whatever is ugly! Oh...just trust me. We just need more storage! (camera pans over shots of complete and utter piles of CRAP THAT NEEDS TO BE PURGED) Insulation costs HOW MUCH?? Structural issues Knob and Tube wiring Leaking pipe Shipment of X is delayed We love to entertain!
that's 13. Need 12 more. Or 11 more? minus the free space?

I love it! I'm trying to think of some other squares....
Mold! This wasn't done up to code/with permits (in the spirit of your deck episode) Behind the walls...those are termites/rats/mice/raccoons/etc. Here's your gorgeous first floor or basement (nevermind the rest of the fug house) You want an updated 4 bed, 3 bath house w/en suite in walking distance to transit? not.gonna.happen.in your budget Your HVAC is shot/inadequate for your house Asbestos
I think something should be like the death knell that kills the game - foundation issues?
Oh, on Love It or List It especially, the vast majority of their "problems" could be solved by the home owners NOT being hoarders. The producers HAVE to go in and just empty the closest and lug huge piles of paper in the house to stash on top of the dining room table and kitchen counter. Right?
What about:
water issues in the basement That bulkhead needs to be removed! OPEN CONCEPT
