I have the defender and I love it. H has the commuter and it already broke once. Mine is much more durable and will take more abuse, but it's bulkier which H doesn't like.

I have the commuter for my Galaxy Nexus, and I love it. It is thinner than the defender, but it has kept my phone protected through many drops (and a few throws from the kids).
I have a pretty low profile case but don't you EVER drop your phone?
I drop it on a regular basis. It's totally fine and barely scratched! I think the phones are more durable than people think.
I'm sure now today my phone will smash into a million pieces.
Do you let V play with it? That is my issue, so I have an ugly bulky otterbox on mine, Henry loves to play with it, and without the case I would be anxious about it. But I think the phone is so much nicer with a sleek case, or no case.
Defender. Definitely. I managed to shatter my screen in a Commuter, but the Defender is doing its job very well. I'll probably have to replace it soon. Also? They have excellent customer service. If you have any issues with the case breaking or coming apart (especially the silicon part) they'll send you a new one.

Not usually. I did yesterday and she somehow completely broke my phone and it took forever for me to fix it. It said "iPhone is disabled" and it only let me make an emergency call… in French. Oy!
Idk which one I have, someone gave me their old one. It makes me nervous to see people w/o a case! Mine dropped from my vanity to the floor and the screen shattered. It wasnt even that big of a fall. Since then I refuse to be without a case for a second...the cost of a screen is like you might as well get a new phone.
H and I have the commuter for our iphones. I've dropped mine a couple times, but otherwise we are pretty gentle with our phones. If I let my kids play with it, I would get the Defender.
I just bought a LifeProof because we don't have Otterbox here. I know that's not helpful but I thought I'd contribute that info
ETA: Just remembered it was @therealmc who said Lifeproof was awesome so I thought of her while buying it. *creepy probie thoughts while shopping in another continent*
