My friend's wife had a really tough pregnancy. They thought she lost the baby at 11 weeks, she had a nasty fall down some stairs at 19 weeks, and she went into labor 6 weeks early. He came out kicking and screaming, but soon stopped. He was immediately intubated and it was discovered he has a congenital heart defect. His two main blood vessels are reversed, essentially pumping his blood backwards. The heart wasn't sending oxygenated blood to the body, but rather back to his lungs. He immediately had one surgery to filter the blood better, but he is still on a ventilator. Good news is that he's put on enough weight to finally have the surgery needed to switch the vessels. He just posted that they switched the aorta and coronary arteries successfully, and now they have to work on the pulmonary artery.
Scary stuff, but this little one has already seemed too stubborn to give up. If you guys want to check out their FB page, here's the link www.facebook.com/MonroeMG
Oh my gosh, that sounds so scary. I'll send them good thoughts. Do you know what the long-term prognosis is?
I'm not sure yet, I think they are just trying to take baby steps and trying to reach one milestone at a time. He will be in the hospital for quite a while longer I presume.
