We moved into a new house at the beginning of the year and I have yet to pull out my sewing machine. I'm trying to figure out the best place to set it up where I could leave it up. We have an unfinished basement, but when I think about sitting down there to sew, I get lonely. Why? Because its not the best place to let DDs play, and it would be just me and the cat in the cool, slightly musty smelling basement.
We have a space on our upper floor where I could set up, but I would have to move my stuff in a few months to make room for a crib for the new baby coming. Our master is up there, and there could potentially be space up there, but I'm not sure that it would work out great.
Our main floor consists of our EIK, LR, and DDs' two BRs. There's no extra space in the kitchen or LR to set up my sewing stuff, especially if I want to leave it up.
We are looking to finish off the basement in the next year or so, so once that is done there will be space for my stuff. I'm just stuck on what to do right now since there's not really any extra space anywhere unless I want to hang out in the lonely basement.
I'm really starting to suffer from sewing withdraw! lol

Our new house has a finished basement and I claimed the biggest basement bedroom for my sewing space. I prefer to be left alone when I sew and I have a tv in there plus I listen to audiobooks when I sew.
The best benefit of that room was the giant walk in closet that holds (and hides) my embarrassing fabric stash. I have room for my 4 machines and my serger, plus my cutting table and the desk I sew on with my portable machines. Two of my machines are in desks. I can also leave my ironing board up all the time.
Can you tell how much I love my room? It's twice the size of my old room and such a great space.
We moved into our apartment with grand plans for a shared crafting space/computer lab in our second bedroom. That quickly went by the wayside when I went back to school, and my husband's computer lab (complete with server rack, 6 computers and 2 monitors) took over the second bedroom. Then I finished school and brought my sewing machine back out. I literally had to wade through the computer crap to get to it.
I set up shop on the dining room table... but I had to move my stuff whenever we wanted to use the table for non-sewing purposes. Then I moved my sewing machine to the coffee table... but that wasn't comfortable and I had to move my stuff when we had company.
A couple months ago I convinced DH to make room for me in the second bedroom. It's really cramped up there, and very separate from the rest of the house, which can be kind of lonely... but I don't have to put my stuff away when we have company.
Can you make any "quick and dirty" improvements to the basement to make it usable sooner? Otherwise you'd have to do the setup/takedown thing in the downstairs areas or have a temporary space in the soon-to-be-baby's room.

Our guest bedroom houses my sewing desk and my fabric stash- the stash is contained in a storage unit that also has the TV and Blu Ray player on it. I stream old shows (guilty pleasures like Dawson's Creek) while I sew.
My sewing stuff is all over the dining table. We don't use the dining table though so that's ok! Although ideally I'd like a lower table as the dining table is a bit high for me to sew on..... And I can also only really sew during nap time as the play area (livingroom) can't be seen from the dining room....
All my card making stuff is in the breakfast nook and I use the breakfast table for that. Which used to be fine as we would eat watching tv, but now we have DS in the highchair we need the table, so I have to pack it up mid project if we need to eat! I can at least do some stuff there while he is playing though...if he lets me! I rarely getting anything done while he is up though!
Our next house hopefully will have a better crafting area!.... I'm dreaming! We are renting though so we will move in the next year or so probably.... If we can have a playroom/ craft room where my stuff can be fenced off from him that would be good...or if the play area was central and there was a room that I could see him but close the door too that would be good... As I said...I'm dreaming.... And pinning ideas on pinterest!

Mine is in one of the spare bedrooms. It's actually a pretty extensive craft room. We don't have kids yet but since our house is only 3 bedrooms the basement will be getting finished and will include a craft room and playroom for when the time finally comes!
There are some sewing machine carts that compact pretty neatly and roll for easy storage that might be worth looking at that you can still get good use of once you get your basement done. The company I'm thinking of is called Arrow. Here is an example: www.arrowcabinets.com/cabinets.php?id=11
We have a back room that, once it stops being the room-full-of-shit-we-still-haven't-unpacked, will become the TV/Computer/Craft room. We have a long desk on one wall with the computer already set up at one end. All of my craft stuff will go at the other end. We're planning to add a second story in a couple of years, and H already knows that the craft room is non-negotiable.
hunniapple-I think I'm going to have to look into getting a cart like those. It'll work well enough for now, and once we finish the basement it'll work out perfectly.
The only thing that keeps me from using our kitchen table is that its a high table, one of those counter height tables, which would make it impossible for me to comfortably sew..
I have folding tables set up in our finished basement, with an accordion style room divider if needed to keep DS out. It's open to DS's playroom...which is perfect. He gets so into his trains at his train table that he doesn't even know I step up to do a bit of crafting. But...I can still see him and go play with him if he's had enough of playing alone. It's nice to have an option of doing something crafty right away if needed.

Right now we live in a 2 bedroom townhouse so all my craft stuff is jammed into the corner of the kitchen. Whenever we get a house we are planning on having at least 3-4 bedrooms and one of those will be a craft room.
