No you don't need all that have recommended and really people aren't going to go by your registry they will buy what they want to. I did three registries one specific for ppl in my home town did anyone actually use it NO they went to a local clothing store and bought clothes. So everything we returned there I'll have to wait til I'm back in town to spend the gift cards. Sorry little rant lol. On phone as well.
I think as long as you have the basics car seat, crib, stroller, bottles, pacis, a few blankets, one or two swaddlers, changing pad, diapers, diaper pail, some clothes. We did get one small swing free from a friend. Our house is super tiny so I don't have room for bouncy, swing, jumper, and all the extra stuff. If the swing doesn't work I'll get rid of it and try something else.
I can't help, I just love that we basically posted the same thing at the same time.
We went to BBB. I didn't do everything on the list - in fact, there's a lot left over, but I got overwhelmed with everything. I might add more later or maybe not. I mostly focused on the stuff she will need in the first couple of months, so I'm not registering for toys, stuff for when she starts solid (i.e. high chair, bowls, etc.) I also think some of it is just totally unnecessary for us, like a bottle warmer, wipe warmer, steam sterilizer, etc.
I also have zero clothes on there just because I assume people will buy whatever they want anyway and I'd rather get the other stuff and buy a few basics later if I need it.
ETA: @abbycobb, not sure if you'd be interested, but I'd be happy to email you the spreadsheet we created using Baby Bargains, Lucie's List, and Amazon reviews. We have it categorized by "area/theme", plus we had prices for Buy Buy Baby and Amazon listed for most items, just for comparison's sake (those are the two places we are registering). Let me know if you want it!
I would buy Baby Bargains - they have great suggestions of what to buy and what you need/don't need. Also, don't try and pick all the major things in one day. One week we did the crib, one week we did the stroller/car seat, one weekend we did smaller things, etc. Also you can always add/change later online.

Get a Rock n Play!! My son loves it! It is super easy to move around the house too. We also have a Pack n Play that will be great as he grows (travel crib), but the rock n play is way better right now. A sound machine is a must have for us too. Right now I'm using an app on my phone for white noise but a machine in on our Christmas list.
Other must haves: at least 4 aden & anais blankets, a couple swaddle me things, 3 or 4 crib sheets and pads, bottles and bottle brush and drying rack, 5 baby towels and washcloths, 3 or 4 paci, at least 10 gerber diaper style burp rags, at least 3 changing pad covers, carseat and stroller, wipes and diapers & healthcare stuff (diaper ointment, fever meds, thermometer, etc), season appropriate clothing (mainly sleepers) and a couple of hats - I can't tell you how many short sleeved onesie outfits I received for my baby born in November. Um, it's cold. He needs long sleeves! And of course diapers and wipes.
I have a boppy and haven't used it yet. We have a lot of books and toys and haven't used them yet so I cant speak to that stuff.

Nearly 3 weeks in, I am loving: wubbanub paci like mel suggested, aden and anais swaddle blankets (so soft! get several so you can have some on deck in case of spit ups and what not), boppy pillow has been amazing for me with breast feeding, gripe water, dr brown's bottles, bottle drying rack, ergo carrier.
You're welcome! It took the good part of a day, but I do think it helped when we went in to register today. Here's the Lucie's List one if you want that too! I hope it works!
For us our top things lately have been: wubbanubs, K'tan wrap, bouncer, full size swing (she won't sleep in the rock n play), our video monitor (we have a small house so it felt unnecessary at first but it's nice to not have to walk into the nursery and wake her up to check on her if she's just fussing in her sleep), medela pump, changing pad liners, and white noise machine.
