MIL has these side tables in her storage unit and offered to refinish and paint them for our bedroom. I'd replace the hardware on them as well.
We current have a platform bed from CB2-- I don't like matchy matchy so I'm open to something a little different. Our walls will be grey and we have HW floors and woodwork.
I would do a pop of color as an accent. What other colors are in the room?
We have a blue letterpress print and a blue and white chinoiserie duvet that we use with orange and white sheets, but that's about it. We haven't done any decorating since we moved in and aren't really tied to a certain color.
They totally can be saved. I love refinishing cheap or free old end tables and dressers and if they're cheap or free, I tend to go for a fun pop of color.
So let's say if you did yellow (or whatever color you prefer), you could maybe paint it a light yellow and have the drawer be a brighter version of the same yellow. For the drawer color you can get sample sizes of Behr paint at Home Depot for under $3, so doing two colors would be cheap.
ETA: I just saw that you have blue accents in the room. In that case, I would do what I said above, except in blue.

Based on that, I think white would be more sophisticated, but orange would be a fun pop of color. Depends on what you're going for.
I have an AW. This isn't quite the same, but it's is why I suggested doing two tone. This dresser was $25 and an ugly dark green. I replaced the hardware and found a paint strip that I liked and bought the sample sizes of each color. I love how it turned out. (It's in DD's nursery)
