She has some funny debit card that I can't use to book a hotel room for them because it's not Mastercard or Visa or anything I've ever heard of. So she decides to go to Walmart and get a prepaid card from there. I tell her to go to the ATM and take out a couple hundred dollars to put on the prepaid card. What follows is our conversation:
Me: Yeah, I would throw a couple hundred on it for what you need in case somewhere can't take your debit card.
Sister: I only have a little over $100 on it, though.
Me:...uh, I thought you had over $1,200? Where's the other $1,100?
Sister: Oh, it's all in cash.
Me: *Sister's Full Name*, that is so fucking STUPID! Why on earth would you carry that much cash? OMG!
Am I freaking out over nothing or is that beyond crazy to carry over $1,000 cash on you while driving from Kansas to California?
Thanks goodness I'm not alone in this! I was stunned and then FURIOUS with her. She did apologize and said she didn't realize how bad of an idea it was, but man...wow. There's just so much that can go wrong there. What if she leaves her purse at a gas station? What if they get robbed? What if she drops her wallet? You know what I mean, right?
Yikes. The most cash I carry is like $20 and that's rare!
Is there a reason she has a weird debit card?
Yes, at her old job they put their paychecks on it some kind of debit card, but it's not sponsored by any of the major credit card companies. She said she ran in to trouble with it a couple of times.

Typically, yes. But wen my card was damaged ad wouldn't swipe and still won't and we found ourselves with no credit cards.. I went and got a bunch of cash until my cards get here.

That's an exception...the general rule is to not carry a ton of cash while traveling, right?
