I can't see the first link - it's not working for me. But from experience, I like Ektorp very much. We had an Ektorp sofa for 10 years and it was comfortable and practical for us. We went through at least 2 or 3 slipcovers (student parties/couch surfers, then young children) and it was great. I think we paid $500 for it, and we sold it on craigslist for $100 10 years later. Pretty good IMO.

WHEW! Good to hear. Thanks! Did you ever try the white slipcover?
No friggen way. We had a light green one first and wised up and went with navy blue after that. My animal school friends and my animal children would have seen the white as a personal challenge to go for maximum destruction.

I wanted the ektorp, but my husband thought it was uncomfortable and better for shorter people. It hit him well below his neck and wasnt a really "floppable" couch.? We ended up paying the same for a non slipcovered one from a department store. I must say it is much more comfortable. I am glad we went this route. I have two little boys and a dog, so we made sure to get the stain warranty and all of that and it still cost the same as the Ektorp.
I had the Ektorp loveseat with white covers. I liked the look, but could never get all of the stains out. Likely, they were inexpensive to replace. I really did like my loveseat and at 5 years old was able to sell it for $80

My sister loves her Ektorp. I find it very comfortable, although not sure how old it is. She had white covers, and they shredded after many beleaches and 2 cats. She now has the grey ones and loves them!
Honestly, for what you described, I think it is a good substitute.
I've had that couch for about a year. It's fairly comfortable considering it isn't high quality furniture. The first 6 months I was really diligent about flipping around the cushions to make sure they had equal wear and tear. I am single, so I have no idea how it holds up with children or animals, but I think you'll be happy enough with it for a while.
