DH had a white flakoti his brother brought home from a stint in Greece. I'm sure it was lovely new, but it got dingy and disgusting even just next to his bed.
My closet seems to be where dust bunnies do their breeding; I think it has to do with the forced air HVAC, so I would be disinclined to put a high pile in mine. If I had a wood floor, I might put a floor cloth or shorter napped piece in.
Two other caveats-
shag carpets are notorious for "absorbing" dropped items like earring backs.
moisture can be an issue if the closet is adjactent to the bathroom. My mother's FL house has a wonderful closet in the MBath that had a shag; she had to be very careful of ventilation until she ripped it out and had the area tiled. My father would wander in soaking wet to get clothes.
I really really wanted one and got one from overstock. It lasted about 6 months . I tired having it professionally cleaned but it didn't get the stains out.
auntie, none of my jewelry is in the closet. They are all in a jewelry chest in our bedroom. The closet was not in the original plan of the house. It's built possibly in the last 5-7 years. Idk..but we have no air ducts going in there. So not having any air return, can it become a problem?
boiler717, was yours in the closet too? was it stained just from walking in? We usually don't take any food or drink into the closet so I wasn't worried about stains. Was yours acrylic or olefin?

Ours wasn't in a closet, I think that would help! It was in a living area, but no food/drinks/shoes. It was like dust and stuff just built up in it and we couldn't get it out. I'm not sure of the material, but it was from Overstock.

I'm not sure. My closet shares a duct with the MBath. It does needs to be vacuumed out regularly but isn't as bad as the one in my pantry or foyer for dust.
I would do it. It's not a high traffic area, so I can't imagine that you'd have to worry about keeping it clean or wear and tear. And I hate standing barefoot in the closet trying to decide what to wear and getting dressed. I would LOVE to feel a soft shag rug beneath my feet. Hm....
UGH..I don't know if I can do the white.. I don't have the guts..DH says get gray since it won't look dirty if it does get dirty! Should I listen to him?
