How much would you expect a tutor to charge?

I have a 8th grader who is struggling with his Algebra. I am math dumb and my H doesn't get home from work until late.

I've found a few tutors in our area that are $35-50 an hour.

IDK, that just seems so high...

I was expecting to pay $20-$25.

When I was tutoring in college, I charged $15. But I have no teaching experience, I'm just good at calculus.

In our area, that's easily the going rate if not higher. I have a friend who used to tutor through a small company. She was charged out at $90/ hr! She was worth it - she was an English teacher and VERY good at her job. But.... yeah, it was $$$.

If she had gone out on her own, she would have charged less.

In our area, thats definitely the going rate. Numerous of my teacher friends tutor and they charge around $50 an hour.

Two friends who are teachers tutor -- one charges $75 an hour (in NJ) and one charges $100 an hour (in NY. side note: I don't know how she is as a teacher, but she's certainly not the sharpest crayon in the box).

There's a poster on MM whose husband is a tutor who charges just under $1000 an hour (in NY). So, you know...

I have been getting tutored in algebra since the summer (reviewing algebra I through college algebra/trig) and he charges $45/hr. In my area, they ranged from $35-$55, mostly. I did see a couple of college kids charging about $25/hr, but they had no reviews yet. My guy is a retired math teacher.

When I tutored while teaching I was able to charge $50-75 an hour in a higher end district. I miss that and the salary in the district. It was great :-) damn Florida and being laid off lol

It depends on their credentials and if they are working independently or through a service. Special education teachers or those that teach specific programs/methods can charge more than regular teachers, who charge more than non-teachers. I paid $60 an hour for Wilson reading to be taught by a special ed teacher, and was quoted $80 an hour by more than one Orton Gillingham tutor. We also paid $30 an hour (plus a small payment service charge) for a basic teacher through a service. This was all in NJ.

Around here teachers charge about $65 and hour, but a little less in the summer. College students charge about $30.

You are cheating yourself. The only people who charge so little here are high schoolers tutoring other high schoolers. Hell, i charged $10/hr in hs 15 years ago.

I charge $35 - $45 an hour, but won't tutor beyond Algebra 2. Higher maths and Prep sessions can run you upwards of $75 an hour.

My daughter tutors a friend's daughter for $20 an hour. She is a freshman in college but it is only basic math. She could tutor Algebra and Geometry, etc as well.

Perhaps contact the Honor Society at your local high school. You will get a smart teen and pay a bit less. If this was Calculus or such, I would pay the higher price.

I paid $125/hour for an Orton trained tutor for DS 10 years ago.

A math tutor in this area typically gets about $50/hr if they are degreed. More for higher maths and graduate degrees. DH does a lot of math tutoring, his college grad students pay him in bourbon and beer. He does it for the love.

Is your child doing their homework? Math isn't a spectator sport; if they're not doing all the problem sets, I'd start there.

Then I'd look to see what supports are available through your school. For free. DS's middle and high school had official twice weekly clinic hours where kids could drop in to see teachers for extra help right after school. The NHS tutors one night a week at each of the high schools. Contact the teacher and see what might be available. A few of DS's teachers were willing to meet with kids any afternoon after school or even before.

Depends on the tutor's credentials and skills.

In 1995, I charged $25/hour as a college freshman majoring in English (to tutor MATH).

I also have an eighth grader and for all of last year we paid $50/hr. For reference we live in the Southeast and after calling around this is about the average. But this year, I quit one of my part time jobs and dedicate a lot more time to his homework and am basically his tutor.
ETA: I feel you on the algebra!!

So this seems reasonable to me.

Many of my teacher friends (middle and high school) tutor on the side and they charge anywhere from $50 per hour up to $75 per hour.  The first grader of one of my partners is tutored, and I think he pays less per hour.

15 yes ago I charged 25/hr and upped it to 30 when I had my masters. I am also special ed certified.
If I charged now it would probably be 40.
