I need advice, ideas, whatever you have to offer. I recently acquired two mid century cabinets that sat on top of a larger cabinet. They are 36 inches wide,16 inches deep and 16 inches tall. One looks like it was a record cabinet with sliding doors and wire racks and the other open by the front folding down. They are in good condition and I don't know what to do with them. I was thinking of getting some hairpin legs and figuring out how to attach them. Since they just sat on top of the last cabinet they have no dedicated or reinforced place to screw them in, does anyone have any advice?
The only other option I can think of is to leave them on the ground, make pillows for the top and use them as benches.
They don't need much in the way of refinishing, maybe just a bit of sprucing up. Is there a magical oil I can rub on that will make them shiny?
Possible relevant: I have young children who will have their hands all over the finished product. I am moderately handy and pretty crafty. I am definitely willing to try new things but I am pretty cheap.
I would probably build a platform base/bases for the cabinets to sit on...and install the legs on that. I would just do something simple, very slightly larger than the base of the cabinet that is stained/painted a contrasting tone.
