This is about my 7 year old, but I thought it was a good reminder to teach kids safety things early. DS went to the park this weekend with his bff and bff's stepdad. Stepdad was helping the boys practice for little league which starts up again after the first of the year. I dropped ds off at the park and asked if stepdad needed my extra booster for the drive home. He said, "No, we got it covered."
This morning, ds told me that there was a problem with the seat belt where the booster ds was to sit in was and the stepdad told ds it was fine to not wear a seatbelt because it was just a few blocks. Ds told the stepdad that he was not allowed to ride in cars without wearing a seatbelt and he could call me to pick him up. The stepdad rearranged the boosters so there was a working seatbelt for him to use. I was so proud of him for speaking up like that!
So ladies, teach them early. Even if you think they aren't paying attention, you never know when the information you give might be used!
