Sorry for the delay, but Gabriel arrived on 12/21/13 at 9:46 am weighing 8ibs14oz and 20.5 inches long.
We arrived at the hospital at 6 am for my c-section. Since our c-section was scheduled late the day before, we weren't in the system, but they sent me to triage to get ready. My blood pressure was reading high, but everyone thought it was due to nerves over the c-section (it was perfect the day before at the dr.'s office). Once I was prepped and ready for the OR I went in and received my spinal. My doctor was right there holding my hands as they played Christmas music. I joked it was appropriate because we were so close to Christmas. They waited for me to get numb and it felt like I had a warm blanket on my feet, then it just started feeling weird. Eventually it felt like there were little needles being dragged over my skin. Once they were ready to pull the baby out I felt a lot of tugging and it hurt - I remember feeling him being pulled out which apparently you shouldn't feel. I remember seeing Gabriel and asking how big he was (I bet 9ibs, Tim bet 8.5 ibs), but he had to be brought to another room to be weighed. After that, I don't remember a lot except being moved into recovery -- I think they upped my meds a lot. The nurse was on the phone and she found out I had pre-eclampsia and I needed to be put on magnesium. Mag is no joke and basically makes you feel like you are going through menopause with bad hot flashes. Luckily I never got sick to my stomach. Since I was so drugged up I wasn't able to see Gabriel right away. Luckily, DH took his iphone up to the nursery and facetimed me so I could see Gabriel have his first bath. The nurse checked the computer system and told me he was 8ibs 14oz. After about 3 hours I finally got to meet Gabriel and hold him. I breast fed him too and a nurse helped me get him to latch. During this time they had to put my on oxygen since my H2O was low. I was on morphine and my face was super itchy. I had to be monitored for 24 hrs since I was on so many meds and couldn't room in with Gabriel that night.
Luckily each day things are getting better and we had a really good pedi apt today. He lost 10oz in the hospital but is already almost up to his birth weight 6 days later (he's now 8ibs11oz and when he was born he was 8ibs14oz). He is already 75% - 90% for weight and height and his head grew 2cm. My supply is really high right now so she suggested I pump 1x per day so he can have a bottle at night to get used to it (for when I go back to work) & so I can have more sleep. She also said it's okay to use a pacifier at night since he really needs to suck to sooth which will also help us get more sleep. I am so proud of our little boy, he's been doing so well and I am relieved breast feeding is working so well! Gabriel is very tongue tied so he's meeting with an ENT next week….luckily it hasn't interfered too much with nursing.
I'm sorry that your delivery experience was a little rough, but so excited that you have a healthy little one at the end of it all.
How are you feeling now?
Your baby boy is so incredibly precious. LOVE! I love that second picture so much. That hat! That tongue!
I am doing better, each day things get a little bit easier and I have more energy, but c-section recovery + breast feeding is no joke. I could not have gotten through this past week without DH, he is truly the best support system and best dad in the world. He takes amazing care of me & Gabriel. Now if we can get a bit more sleep, I will feel like a new person. lol
