Dirtysouth? Anyone have any insights on what is involved? Without POA we can't do anything, or put out any fires. And there are all kinds of fires are burning.
Eh, that wasn't too helpful. She basically said what TBM said - the person has to sign off on it in order for it to be granted to someone else. There have to be two witnesses to that signature and it needs to be notarized.
Do you want the info for the attorney that did theirs? Not sure where you are in the state, but this person is in Fort Lauderdale. She might be able to tell you what the easiest course of action would be.

Yeah, we're nowhere close to Ft. Lauderdale. But the link TBM posted was very helpful. We're at least getting a better idea of how to proceed in the coming weeks.
I don't know. There is so much I need to find out. Right now I don't even know the difference between Medicare and Medicaid (or which she has), let alone POA, durable POA, guardian, surrogate, etc. And the nursing home is not giving us any info because we are not legally her guardians. One thing for sure, she is NOT being adequately cared for. It's deplorable, probably because she entered the system as an indigent. I found her filthy and dehydrated. I visit 2 hrs at a time and spend it feeding her, giving her liquids, massaging her legs, cleaning her with baby wipes and dry shampoo, and putting Vaseline on her lips, nose, and heels. Either me or my brother will be taking her on, but I don't know whether Virginia or Florida is the better choice, and I don't know HOW to find out. This is all so sudden and new to me.
I'm so sorry. It's a tough situation. My aunt is guardian for my demented aunt and it was quite the process getting things set up and then moving her to a facility closer to the guardian's home. Every state has a slightly different spin on things.
This is a link to an organization near me, scroll down the page to CAPS (Children of Aging Parents) which was founded local to me but has information links specific to FL. If they can't help you find the answers, they may be able to direct you to the people who can help you.

auntie thank you so very much. This is a tough time. I hope my shoulders are big enough to carry this load, because it feels like the weight of the world right now. The house is just mind blowing. It took 2 days to empty ONE room. We have no place to put the trash- the dump won't let us in because we are not local residents. We called local hauling services, but none of them called us back (I will NEVER understand how self employed contractors stay in business; seems like they ALL suck); so we called the city waste mgt for their "extra pickup" service. They said it would be "about a week" which isn't an extra pickup at all, it's just the regular schedule... :::sigh:::

Just seeing this. I'm so sorry about all of this. If you are anywhere near Port Charlotte, I can give you the name of an attorney who helped my mom out with a power of attorney and eventually probate for her parents.
