We are getting pictures done , mainly of my 6 month old son but also with me and DH. The pictures are going to be on the beach and a little park (by the beach). im thinking I'll wear a maxi dress, either navy blue and white stripes or a grey one? Or I could do a pop of color DH and DS in tan/khaki cargo shorts and either a button down or polo shirt. DS navy blue polo or green? DH in button down with navy blue pattern? All in navy blue? navy blue and gray? navy blue and green? navy blue and other?
We're doing family pics next week with similar colors. I'm wearing a navy blue dress with a pattern, DH is in a navy shirt and khakis, and the girls on here all urged me to do a pop of color for DS instead of a navy shirt. Here is what we are wearing.
I wouldn't wear grey. I'd do the navy blue and white striped maxi dress.
I just got this email from our photographer for our beach photo session in a couple weeks;
What to Wear?
My goal is to create a portrait which will be a lasting memory for you to cherish. The key to this is SIMPLICITY. Simple, plain outfits and properly applied make-up can make a world of difference.
Typical styles of clothing for families & couples:
Beach Casual
Beach casual is khaki shorts, Capri’s, skirts (as long as they are not too short) or pants. Your top should be light in color with no patterns like flowers or stripes. If the beach portrait will include more than one person then you should coordinate on the color of your shirts. It is a good idea to wear the same colors because this will bring more focus to the faces in your beach portrait. Beach casual also means minimal jewelry and bare feet. If the weather is cooler, then long sleeves and pants are okay.
The Blues Blue is the perfect color for beach portrait outfits. Any shades of blue will go well with the surrounding scenery, making your beach portrait that much more harmonious. Blues come in different shades, so if taking family or group portraits, try to coordinate your blue colors. Stonewashed denim shirts are a popular choice for beach portraits. Wear denim shorts or pants. Keep your feet bare and your jewelry selection minimal.
Classic Whites Wear a crisp white shirt at your beach portrait session. The white colors of your shirt will put the emphasis on the people in the portrait and not the clothes. Button-down shirts, polo shirts and even plain white t-shirts will add an ethereal quality to your portrait. However, not everyone has to wear the same style shirt. You could let everyone’s personality shine through with their white shirt choice. Add to the simplicity and drama of your portrait by wearing white pants, shorts and skirts, too.
In addition to the above styles of clothing here are a few more tips to think about: “Off white” is not the same as ”white”. If one person in your group wears “off white” they will be more noticeable than the others in your portrait. If all the women dress similarly and all the men dress similarly then the photo has a more formal professional look. To make it different you can choose a pastel or light color instead of the white for shirts and tops like sky blue, light pink or pale creamy orange. For beach portraits, stick to lighter tones and pastels (these will give the most pleasing results). Bright colors tend to draw the eye away from the subjects. When shooting multiple families together – if you would like to differentiate each family, you can wear different colored shirts. If you are dark skinned/tan, try to choose another color other than white. Denim is always a great choice! Please wear outfits that fit you well. Clothing that is too tight or too loose will not hang properly and may have too many folds or creases. Dress from head to toe; poses may include your feet. Also, make sure your undergarments (unwanted straps, etc.) are not showing. Note: Tan lines and sunburns cannot be fixed without additional artwork charges. Coordinate colors. Everyone in the family portrait should wear colors that meld well together. Some families choose to match their colors exactly. While this is not necessary, you do need to ensure that all the clothing colors complement each other.
What to Avoid Avoid clothing with words, logos, stripes and loud patterns. Bold patterns etc. can be a big mistake, not only can it be hard to match the rest of the family, these items can also be distracting in the final image as they generally take away from your expression. Avoid wearing short skirts and tank tops because having too much skin exposed can distract from your face. Avoid fad and trendy styles. Basic classics are better clothing choices for your portrait. Trends pass and you want your family portrait to be timeless. Avoid different shades of the same color. If one person is wearing a bright red shirt, you don’t want another person wearing a light red shirt. It will just look like you attempted to match but didn’t quite succeed. Avoid bright, shiny jewelry and large belt buckles. You want the main focus to be on your family, not your clothes. Avoid loose clothing, clothing that has large ruffles or collars as they may blow in the wind
**Remember, clothing should enhance your portrait, not overwhelm it.**
White and khaki are not mandatory for your Hilton Head beach portrait!
Hair
As you may know, sometimes (or most of the time on Hilton Head) the beach can be (very) windy. If you are by the beach, make sure to go out and see just how windy it is – if the wind is up you might consider styling your hair a different way so it won’t be in your face for your session. That being said, wear your hair the way you like it best, but please make plans for wind in advance as retouching is an additional cost to images. Even if you never use hair spray to hold hair in place, it is a good idea to use it before coming to the beach. I always suggest to bring something to pull hair up and away from the face, especially for younger girls and teens. If you plan to have a haircut, try to schedule it at least a week before your session in case you don’t care for the results. Also, a fresh cut may reveal un-tanned skin during the summer. Gentlemen—Come with a fresh shave. Five o’clock shadows can not be retouched.
Make-up
Even if you don’t normally wear make-up, we recommend a light foundation and powder to reduce shine and even your skin tone. (Powder is great for guys too, and no one can tell you’re wearing make-up). Keep it natural It is recommended that you wear your make-up no heavier than you would for an evening out Trim, file and remove old polish from your fingers and toes Lotion prevents your skin from looking itchy and dry, but will also attract sand to your legs while on the beach (keep this in mind)
Shoes
For summer portraits, we suggest everyone to be barefoot. This uniformity works best and also creates a more summery image.
Children It is best not to express any expectations about your portrait session to your children except that it will be a fun time! Telling a child they will need to smile on cue can create anxiety and sabotage your session. Have children rested and fed before they arrive for the photo shoot. If your children like to swim in the pool with their eyes open, be sure to bring eye drops to reduce red eyes for our session. Treats during the session are not advised as this distracts from photos. Be sure to use more than ample sunscreen on your children the days prior to the session; apply evenly to avoid blotchy red skin for your images Please remember that children follow the example of their elders. If dad or granddad sticks his tongue out at the camera, or put ‘horns’ on someone else, guess what happens when we have the whole family posed for the real Portrait! Please set a great example, we’ll end up with a great Portrait!
