I really want DH to take our oldest on a short trip this winter, just the 2 of them. DS will be 5 this spring. He's pretty mature with a good attention span. He loves animals esp sharks. Likes sports ok. I was pushing for a boys' ski trip but they couldn't find any buddies to come along and H didn't want to go alone ( since DS would be in ski school all day).
It will be cold (late jan or feb). We live in the south near a major airport so they can fly anywhere or could drive- ATL is an 8 hr drive, Houston is a 4 hr drive. Any interesting cities / sights / thoughts? It would be for anywhere between 2-4 nights. TIA for any ideas!
I find NYC to be endlessly fascinating for a kid between the Museum of Natural History, the Central Park Zoo, all the kid-focused shows and events, the Staten Island ferry, riding the subway and just people watching in general.
I took my 3 yo to DC last year & he loved it. I know he would love it even more now. Air & Space Museum, National Building Museum, National Zoo, Natural History Museum, riding the metro - we really had a blast.
I was going to say Orlando. Legoland bc what 5yo doesn't love Legos and Sea world if you are not morally opposed. there is a shark dining experience I believe.

DC is a great idea. Almost all of the museums are free too so it would be pretty inexpensive! I think he will love to ride the metro.
