Never knew so many people have known a hoarder. My spouse & I have been brainstorming how to approach this and calculating costs. We've considered paying the mortgage up to date and renting an apartment for a month to clean out the house. We may need a lawyer. And if I am gone away for a month, my spouse will need to buy a car. We have find a home for mom and transport her. The costs are astronomical. We made the long drive home yesterday, and discovered our cat has an infection and needs to go to the vet. This is my HIGH SEASON. I may have to resign my seat with the city.

My neighbor is cleaning out a house for pay for a friend of his (originally was the guy's parents' house, then his sister's). On the first visit, he had to stand in the yard and pull stuff out of the doorway to get the front door open. I've been inside the house - after 5 months of <slow> cleaning, he still can't get in some of the rooms. (Oh, and in a funny-but-not-really vein, said neighbor is himself a hoarder.)
You need the respirator. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.
If you run across large numbers of uncashed checks (as my neighbor is finding), they've probably already been escheated to the state. If you think there's cash and valuables, that might be worth looking into. I've read your other posts but I don't remember - did they have pets?
Tree, I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this!! I would hate for you to have to resign over it - can you take a leave of absence?
We have a neighbor who is an alcoholic and a hoarder. He hoards empty beer bottles. Instead of throwing an empty bottle away he will just pitch it into the pile. I peeked in a window once and saw it. The guy was just living surrounded by beer bottles. I cannot imagine the stinch. Right after thanksgiving he disappeared and has only returned twice to check mail. I think he is living elsewhere because he can't get in and out of his own house any longer. I need to find out how long a house has to sit before it is considered abandoned. The house is already showing signs of exterior deterioration so it's just a matter of time before it will be condemned. Really looking forward to that hit on my property value!
Hoarding is just a horrible mental illness. Tree, I hope this is over for you soon!
In most places, the state treasurer or controller oversees unclaimed property.
When DS was in scouts, the mother of one of the other boys was tapped to fill a vacant state treasurer, she filled me in on this as one of her roles. I went to our state's site and found $25 from an old Schwab account of mine, $40 DH had overpaid on a credit card, a couple days pay he was owed after he retired and a CD worth $30K my father had forgotten about.

auntie, thanks for the link; I'll check it out.
downtonali, no leave for appointed city officials. Maybe the paid ones get that, but my position is unpaid and no benefits. I have to talk to the president of the commission.
