DH and I are in the very early stages of planning a September trip to Italy. During the trip, we think we'd like to spend 3-4 nights along the coast. We'd like to see Capri/Blue Grotto, but other than that, our main interest would be to relax for a few days. We'd like to wander, and sip wine & limoncello in a place with beautiful views. We're both physically active, so we'd love to do some hiking. (This is relaxing to us.)
With those things in mind, which city would you make your base? Should we look at Positano and explore the Path of the Gods? Or would the area around Amalfi & Ravello, with the Atrani Walk be better? Any other suggestions? We just started exploring this, and we're not at all familiar with the area, so all opinions are appreciated. Thanks!
I've only been to Positano (with a day trip to Capri), but we loved it. The views were stunning and there was as much or as little to do as we wanted. We stayed at the Marincanto, which I can highly recommend.
eta: I know nothing about hiking, but Positano was a great home base and you could easily travel somewhere else during the day by ferry, bus, or private transfer.
I totally agree with staying in Positano for the type of vacation you're looking for. It's beautiful. We stayed in Positano for about 4 days - relaxing. You can take boats to various places, do some shopping, have plenty of walking, hiking, and eating...
We took a ferry to Amalfi and IMO, there just wasn't a lot going on. Granted, we stayed for about 2 hours and walked around a little - we could have missed some stuff.
Thanks! After looking over some stuff, we were leaning towards Positano, so I'm happy to see that it's what you both suggested. I'm so excited, and pretty fearful that we won't ever want to leave.

I agree with PPs to stay in Positano. We stayed there and did day trips to the other towns, and I never felt like there was as much going on in other places. Positano has some really great restaurants and quite a bit of shopping. You can take a quick/cheap ferry ride to get anywhere else for day trips. We were there in September, too, and it was really nice because tourist season was starting to slow down and there weren't a ton of people there but the weather as still really nice.
If you have the money and you're up for it, I'd recommend taking Gianni's Boat around Capri. It was one of the highlights of our trip. In September we were the only people on the water. He took us all around the island and over to the Blue Grotto. And he also serves wine and his mother's homemade limoncello on board. It was definitely a day I'd like to do again. :-)

We did this too! We were there in July (2012) and it was crowded so we skipped the Blue Grotto. It was such a great day overall that we didn't regret not going in. We didn't have wine though; that would have been nice!
We just returned (last night) from a trip to Italy. We stayed in Sorrento for almost a week. We had a car and drove to Positano and Amalfi one day, and to Pompeii another day. We spent another day going to Capri. Because it's winter, we didn't get to do as much as you will, but we got a lot of walking/hiking in around the towns on the Sorrentine Peninsula. If/when we go back, it will be in warmer weather, but we'd likely stay in Sorrento again. It's a great location, especially having a car, and easy to get to different places.

We stayed in Sorrento when we visited. We did a day trip to Capri, and skipped the blue grotto because it was super crowded and they kept closing it because the water was rough. We did do a boat tour around Capri, and we stopping in some other grottos which were fun to swim in. I don't regret skipping the blue grotto.
We went to Positano and Amalfi for a day, and it was really beautiful. We actually took a ferry from Positano to Amalfi, and I really liked that because we got a great view of the coast from the water.
