to go from this:
to this:
I'm naturally a light/medium blonde but I've been home dying my hair dark brown for over a year now and I'm ready for a change. If I do go red, I would have it done professionally because I don't trust myself to not ruin it.
But would they even be able to get it that light in one go? Or would I need to have my hair lightened in stages after being so dark? Would they strip the color out or bleach it? I'm wondering how involved, damaging and expensive this might get.
I think you are better off doing it gradually by going a darker red allover color, with some lighter red highlights. You can gradually add in more highlights and go lighter over a period of a few months this way with less damage, and less cost.x
Definitely go gradually especially if your hair is currently that dark. Also, definitely go to a professional that is not something to attempt at home.
ETA: Stripping is very damaging and most stylist won't strip your hair then bleach it because most likely your hair may fall out. This is what my sister was told. Her hair was almost black and she had it stripped then dyed a warm brown. Our stylist refused to do highlight because she said her hair would probably fall out.
