We registered for one, but didn't get it. I was wondering if it's absolutely needed? Does it really remove the smell? Obviously I don't want the nursery smelling like dirty diapers, but I know I'm not going to want to make the trip downstairs in the middle of the night to throw diapers away in the trash. But I feel like I've been in baby's rooms that have one and still have that diaper-y smell.
Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, I want to pick up some of the remaining necessities off our registry this weekend and wanted some input first.
We're just getting a regular diaper pail, but plan on individually wrapping each dirty diaper in a plastic bag. We'll probably empty the diaper pail once a day?
I'm a little bit nervous because our household garbage is only collected every two weeks, so we'll have dirty diapers sitting in our bin outside for two weeks until the trash is picked up….which could really suck. So I'm sensitive about containing the smell (both inside the house and outside) as much as possible.
I tried several options with my ds and eventually ended up getting a diaper genie. It kept the stink to a minimum better than anything else I had tried.
Yes!! I have a 3 yr old son and used it with him. I used to close the diapers back up with the Velcro and his room never smelled! The bags for it are expensive so I also had a regular trash can in there that I put pee diapers in. When he got older and didn't poop as much (so the bag didn't get changed as much), it still never smelled.

On the advice from my Mom friends I didn't get one. I got a regular diaper pail, then these small scented individual diaper disposal bags to wrap poopy diapers in. The packs of little diaper disposal bags are 75 little bags for $1. I just plan on changing the trash frequently to avoid smells.
I didn't register for one. I was originally looking at the Ubbi because I didn't want to have to but special bags, but now I'm thinking about maybe buying a stainless trash can and using that. Haven't decided yet, but I think it seems unrealistic to think that any device will cover up the smell. I'm skeptical of diaper genies (using it as a generic term)!
I got an Ubbi diaper pail. From what I've read, no diaper pails work 100%. We just plan on using Arm & Hammer bags and taking out stinky diapers every night. If BFing works out, we should have terribly stinky diapers in the beginning. I don't like the squishing required in a diaper genie.

No. We just throw our diapers in the kitchen trash. We've never had a smell issue and if there is a particularly stinky diaper we just take the trash out. Easy peasy.
ETA: I find that leaving our trash open makes it less smelly than closing the lid.
We never had one. I just had a small can with a lid (the foot pedal kind) and changed the bag once a day. Smell was never an issue.
We did this as well or just threw the diapers in with the regular trash. We changed it often enough it wasn't an issue. We stopped wrapping the diapers in the plastic bags b/c it seemed overkill.

Each diaper pail seems to get mixed reviews, IMO. We dont have room for one so I wrap them up in Sassy scented bags I found on Amazon. Terrible for the environment, but we use a small wastebasket for all the trash in a 1BR apartment and they do mask the smell very, very well.
DD's diapers didnt smell so bad in the beginning but they do now and she is still EBF.
