I can get so far by looking on their website, but often I just call if there's specific things I want to know. For instance, I just called to ask if my plan covers childbirth classes (no) and breastpumps (yes). In the case of the breastpump, they were able to give me specific websites to look at for picking one and further information about how/when to order it. I don't think I could have found that out without calling.
I just called as things came up. For example, I called months ago to ask about genetic testing and received two completely different answers, as it was! Then, I called last week to ask about breast pumps. The PP is correct, you can only get so far online, I'd rather have a firm answer from a person.
My insurance didn't have any info online... which is super annoying since I prefer to have things in writing. So, I ended up just calling for everything.
I find it best to call if I have a specific question. And if the person you talk to says "I would think that was covered" call back or ask to speak to someone else. When I called the first time regarding ultrasound coverage, the lady used the "I think" line and I was like uhhhh that's not good enough. I called back and got someone who definitely knew the answer.

My OB's billing office was actually super helpful in telling me how they bill (i.e. what's billed immediately, and what's combined together and billed at delivery) and her understanding of my insurance's coverage. Then, I called my insurance and clarified with them. I tried to look it up online and in my benefits book, but it was only marginally helpful.
