If you are checking the car seat and want to protect it, we use the Britax bags but they are expensive. Another option is this bag, it fits like a backpack and we use this all the time when we travel. We have multiple kids and use multiple bags.
I also recommend this Cosco car seat. We ONLY use this when we travel -- very light weight, fits on airplane seats and inside the bag linked above. It would be a cinch to install in a Taxi when needed.
We have the childress backpack bag and just used it for an international flight. It worked well. And the nice thing is that you can fit other stuff in the bag as well = free luggage!
We use the britax one too. Be careful about putting other stuff in it, we do it too but some people don't allow it, twice I have been told to remove the extra stuff.
Do you need a car seat in chicago in taxis? I would probably either get a car service with a car seat or, if you don't need a car seat in taxis in chicago, think about going without, but we have done that in taxis before and I realize not everyone is comfortable with that
I have the Diono bag. Just traveled to LA with it for the first time last week. I wore it on my back through the airport and it was pretty convenient. The padding on the straps is a little lackluster, but I have zero extra padding on me and it was fine. Install was quick on the plane, so I'm guessing a taxi would be equally easy (we had a rental). All in all, I was happy I chose it as my travel car seat.

True. I worried about this. They didn't say anything to us this time with the carseat bag (British Airways and AA), but I have been told to remove things from a ski boot bag that counted as part of the ski bag. They said we could only have the ski boots in there. Nothing else.
We rented a car seat this weekend from Hertz, and it was fine. It was a Cosco Scenera and it was clean, and they had it in the car waiting for us, although we had to install it. When we lived in London we would use a car service that had car seats if you requested them and they were also fine. You have to decide what you are comfortable with; as I said we have taken taxis without car seats at all so obviously our comfort level is different than other peoples (usually out of necessity, not choice)
