I'll be headed to Thailand for a couple weeks in early February and will have my one free weekend in Bangkok. I'm traveling solo but have a few friends that I expect to be able to meet for a meal or two. I'd like to do some touristy stuff but have already covered all the BIG and common touristy things on prior trips (namely the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, Wat Pho, Emerald Buddha, Jim Thompson House, Chatuchak Market). The only big thing I haven't done (that I'd like to) is the floating market. So, what else?
I have the Nancy Chandler map which is awesome for poking around town...but it's a big town. I'll probably be staying in Silom but feel comfortable getting almost everywhere either via metro or taxi. I want to stay busy so that I don't spend too much time homesick for DD and DH - and to take advantage of traveling without a toddler!
Khao San Road is something to see if you've never done it before. Take the ferry and walk up from there. Lots of bars if you want to sit and people watch, and lots of inexpensive stores.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. Mark Twain

Oh, yes, thanks! I've been there so I wouldn't necessarily have gone back if you hadn't suggested but since I went there during Songkran, basically all I was doing was shooting water guns at people, drinking beer, and hoping nobody rubbed the white paste on my neck. I here are are lots of crazy backpackers in that area to people-watch (there were actually a ton of Thai at Songkran).
There are some cool things to see in the general vicinity of the Floating Market. Bridge on the River Kwai and Tiger Temple are two that come to mind.
Dying to visit Kanchanaburi/River Kwai area. Fascinated with that time period and region.
And on a completely non-related travel note, there's a new Colin Firth movie coming out about the true story of a British POW in the area during WWII (Railway Man). Definitely looks intriguing.
