I've never painted any furniture pieces and there are only a bajillion different tutorials/advice out there from oil vs latex, spray vs brush, primer vs no, and on and on. I got an awesome deal on Linus' new big boy bed on craigslist, but it's bright purple. can't spray because of the temps and it will be painted in the spare room. Advice??
I painted Ada's dresser. I sanded everything. Used an oil based primer ( I'm not sure you can use that pregnant). Then I just used normal, high quality paint. I had to do 3 coats but an extreme change might have needed 4. I used a paint brush. I haven't had any issues with chipping so far.
I sand, use oil base primer (one to two coats), regular paint (2 coats), and a clear poly coat (usually several thin coats with a light sand in between). Good luck!
Use a primer even though you're not painting bare wood, it will help cover the purple on fewer coats. 1-2 coats of primer, which can be tinted just like regular paint to your final color. Then 1-2 coats of color. The glossier the paint the easier it will be to clean spills, dirt, etc of when it dries. Use latex paint and brush and go slowly while you paint. Watch for drips. Let it dry for at least a few days before you put it to use.
