I just checked into a Starwood property and they have this 'Go Green' program. Instead of having your room cleaned daily you can opt for either points in your SPG account, a donation, or money to spend on food and beverages at the hotel. I have never seen this before, but I also don't often stay at Starwood properties. Is this common?
I think it's a great program because usually when I'm traveling I don't need it to be serviced every day.
I normally stay at Hilton's and I have never been offered this option. I get annoyed when they put the signs in the bathroom saying hang up your towel if you don't want a new one, but then they give me new ones anyways. I would love more HHonors points instead of having them clean my room daily.

I hate that too.
Maybe it's only certain Hilton properties? The one that I used to go to a lot for work in Orlando definitely gave the green bonus Hilton points.
However, I will add I'm not wild about the number of maids that will be laid off/not hired, because I think a lot of people will opt for a perk over daily service.
I always opt out of towel/sheet changes when I can (and have done so in exchange for points at SPG properties, not that I stay at SPG places often enough for my points to be worth everything). But no daily housekeeping? No way! One of the best things about staying at a hotel is having a clean room and a beautifully made bed every day through no effort of my own.
And hey, I'll just pretend that my high maintenance ways keep people employed and such.

Very common for Starwood - we almost always stay at Starwood hotels and if the Go green program is offered, we do it. The points really add up for us, especially for longer stays!
