Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. Mark Twain
I'm also going to page rikki and cransplash for you because they were very helpful to me when I was planning.
mdgirl- DH and I want to go back to Japan for the Olympics too, but I thought Tokyo is no longer in the running as a Olympic city in 2020? OMG, I just re-looked it up. I really hope we are able to go!
Japan was one of our favorite trips. We spent 10 days there, visiting Osaka, Koyasan, Kyoto, Himeiji Castle, Miajima, Hakone, Tokyo, and Nara. We traveled by train (got the rail pass for JRL before arriving) everywhere, and it was easy to cover all these destinations in our time frame. The highlight for us was an overnight stay in a temple at Koyasan, hiking at Miajima (going up Mount Misen), and everything Kyoto. You'll have a great trip!

I spent 10 days there. We went to Osaka, Tokyo, Hakkone, Nara, and Kyoto. I loved every minute of it. We went in June and it was a bit too hot at times, but I hate heat, so maybe I noticed it more...
We got the rail pass before leaving. We also went to a great soba noodle place in Kyoto (well-known, but I forgot the name of it), and we did a fantastic tempura tasting in Kyoto. I'm sorry I can't be helpful with more names- I went 7 years ago. DH and I want to go back so bad after after watching Jiro dreams of sushi just so we can go to his restaurant, lol.
