Regarding the "price difference for the ticket"....What I paid for the round trip ticket is the price of the current one-way ticket. They're typically the same price. So do I have to pay the hundreds to make up for the more expensive one way?
And, in general, international one-way flights are almost always as expensive - if not more expensive - than an international round trip ticket.
You could look to see what the cost is for you to book a random round-trip ticket back home (using the first leg home and throwing away the second leg back to Europe or wherever you currently are). It could be that it is less expensive to do it that way than to pay the change fee and fare difference, but you won't know until you call Travelocity.
Yes, that's what I'm noticing about the cost.
That's something to consider--thanks. I was hoping I could just do it through the airline.
Check the terms and conditions on your ticket. It should specify the change fees. Also, some deeply-discounted international fares can't be changed at all. We ran into a ticket like that once when I was considering changing a flight because of work.
Call and tell your situation and hope you get someone sympathetic. I had a similar situation (not with Travelocity) and they pulled some strings for me. Ended up being $200 flat and no difference in fare. Mine was an emergency too and I changed my flight the day before flying back internationally. If you do it be prepared for more security scrutiny. I got every extra "random" search on that flight.
