I don't follow a general food philosophy, I watch my calorie intake and that is about it, in general I eat what I want but in moderation.
BF does the paleo diet, and crossfit workouts, and work outs for the police academy and national guard training, he is crazy strong. For him the paleo works because he needs to consume the dense proteins in order to have enough energy, he eats about 3,000 calories a day and has trouble keeping weight on if he eats less than that.
Paleo wouldn't work with me, if someone tried to come between me and my potatoes i'd cut a bitch.

H and I follow the paleo diet kind of (we strive to most days with a couple exceptions). You'd be surprised what you can sub sweet potatoes for or mashed cauliflower and still be pretty satisfied. But every now and then nothing compares to potatoes burnt on the bbq with butter and onion.
If you want it, find a way to work it in. Otherwise, you'll snap and stuff copious amounts of it in your face one day and then shame yourself and restart the cycle.
And I pretty much just made this up so I'd feel perfectly justified in eating red velvet cake on the regular.

There's a lot of wisdom in that for some shit you just made up. And, did you know Ben & Jerry's now has Red Velvet Cake ice cream? How's a bitch supposed to lose some weight with Red Velvet Cake ice cream out there free in the world?
Eat what you want, just don't eat so damn much of it. - paraphrased from a Ted Allen quote
I think there's room for lots of things in a diet, but moderation is key.
We are trying to teach C to eat more veg, fruit, and whole grain while limiting things that could contribute to health issues later. But we don't keep food from her, either. We don't order Mac and cheese for her, but if one f us has some, we share. I don't want her to feel restricted from foods now and binge on them later.

I buy into some of the primal paleo stuff. Mostly I just avoid grains/beans ( as in I don't keep them at home, I'll eat them if I'm out). Really I just go for whole foods. Most dinners are protein with two kinds of veggies.

My current mode of operating is "stop eating so much." I eat a pretty varied diet but too much of the good stuff is still too much. Also, I love candy and my new mantra works for that, too.
kind and gentle. I like my organic produce and hippie meat and dairy. But I'm not too rigid about it.
Do you have any good sources for local/grassfed meat? I finally got all my hippie food sources sorted in DC then I moved and have to start all over again.

We shop at New Leaf Market, mostly, and they carry some local meat. They also have a farm tour every fall that is a lot of fun. We toured this farm once, and you can buy beef through them: www.deeprootsmeat.com/ We considered buying part of a cow along with my sister and her H, but we don't have a deep freezer, and I'm not sure I eat enough beef to justify it taking up ALL the room in my fridge freezer. lol. You should do the farm tour this year. I think it's in October.
Thanks! I don't have room for a deep freeze but I'm already trying to talk friends into doing a cow share when I do. And the farm tour sounds like fun.

So what were those sources? Give me the goods! We still order our grass fed beef and chicken from Texas. Whole Foods is getting better, but it's still challenging to find 100% grass fed all the time.
And my food philosophy is don't eat too much crap.
I want to pet a calf! We watched one being born at a dairy farm last year. That was pretty cool. But no petting. Maybe I can get Hoobs to invite me over someday.

Food sources in dc? I got most of my produce from my neighborhood farmers market (Del Ray), there was a meat vendor there too. Smith Meadows I think? I also ordered eggs, butter, milk and lard from South Mountain Creamery. I wanted to do a bulk order from Polyface through the Alexandia buying club but never got around to it.
