I was supposed to head to Vienna next week to visit my sister. I am pregnant, but everything had been good so far and I was only going to be 23 weeks - so perfect time to go. Unfortunately, as my dr appt on Friday, I was diagnosed with some complications and had to get emergency surgery and now have been advised that I probably shouldn't take the trip.
luckily I bought trip insurance, but I've never had to cancel a flight or use trip insurance. Anyone want to give me some tips on how to go about doing this? TIA.

I would start by calling the insurance company. Just tell them the story and see what they tell you to do. I'm not sure if you'll have to send them documentation or anything.
The one time I had to cancel a trip, we were on the plane and had to get off b/c my FIL passed away. I called the insurance company that day and told them and that was it. They didn't ask for any documentation or anything.
Sorry about the complications and the ruined trip. That's a bummer.

I've been able to file online the times I've had to cancel before the trip took place. They email the claim forms as a PDF. For TravelSafe -You take the one form to the doctor to be filled out. Send that and the receipts back in with copies of the airline cancellation policy. They send a form back asking you to sign that you don't plan on using the value of the tickets Or that you are planning on using the value and just want the change fee. TravelEx didn't have the extra airline form to sign, but I believe it was on the original claim form.
As long as the reason you cancelled is covered (not excluded by a pre existing condition) and your doctor signs the forms it is relatively painless.
Since every insurance company is a bit different, I think calling them would probably be the quickest and easiest option. They can tell you what kind of documentation you'll need from your doctor and how to file the claim.
