So in my childbirth class the teacher has made me feel guilty for not thinking about this/that I am too laid back about it. -did you interview Pediatricians? I was kind of just googling and going to go with one that looked good. (The one rec I've gotten for our area didn't look like a good fit location wise) -if I am supposed to interview, what do I ask? Their website makes their stance on breastfeeding & vaccines clear, they don't have an LC on staff but have recs and I have other contacts. -I was planning on just calling the office and telling them that I am due the beginning of march & is there anything I need to do other than letting the hospital know that they will be the peds. Am I supposed to do anything else?
I'm laid back about this like you are. The hospital I deliver at has a type of baby event twice a year and they have seminars. The pediatrician I chose, I picked at that event. I didn't talk to her but I went to her seminar and she just made me feel comfortable. I called her office the following week and basically just said, "I'm due mid-February, what do I do?" They wanted me to come in and meet with her and I did and she basically just gave me an overview of their practice and she gave me the tDap booster.
I feel like what matters in the beginning is how comfortable they make YOU feel. You won't really know how they operate until you have a child. If for some reason I don't like how she treats my child, I will find a different pediatrician then. That's what happened when I was a baby.
BTW, this practice comes highly recommended in our area. This particular pediatrician just relocated here but has been practicing for a few years.
We are not interviewing. We just went with the local practice that had the best reviews on Kudzu. They have 6 different Docs so figured we could move to someone else within the group.
I just plan to ask my OB for a recommendation. I figure he sees them often enough at the hospital that he can point me in the right direction. I anticipate going in and meeting him/her prior to delivery and filling out what paperwork I can.
I asked my friend for a recommendation. There are closer places but this is a large practice and it's easier to get same day sick appointments. They have an excellent support staff too. So I would keep things like that in mind. They also had a 1 hour orientation for expecting parents (2 couples at a time). It was nice to go to the office w/o the little one and hear about some of the things we'll be dealing with in those early weeks.
Our pedi also makes rounds at the hospital, which is a nice bonus. So they'll see him in the hours after he's born.

I was also kind of figuring that if I didn't like the doc (or any at the practice) I could just switch later on. Oh and the ob did recommend this practice to me, so there is that. They are on the same campus as the hospital so my guess is they come to see the baby there too. I guess I will just a call and ask.
Based on recs from friends, I know which practice I want to use. They schedule prenatal visits with the parents beforehand which include a tour of the office and meeting the doc and nurses.
So to your question, yes. But inadvertently. I think either way is fine.
I got a few recommendations from friends and coworkers, then started calling around to see when the ones that were near me did "meet the doctor" night type things. The one closest to my house only did them on days/times that didn't work with my work schedule at all, but another practice's did so I checked them out. It was basically a tour of the facility and a brief talk by a couple of the docs on how the practice runs, policies and procedures, etc. I liked them so I didn't bother choosing anyone else. After that all I had to do was call them after AJ was born and schedule his weight check and one week appt.
Oh yes, I also don't have my car seat installed or signed up to be inspected (could be a 1-3 week wait!!!!2!1!!), and until last weekend when I set up the bassinet, we didn't have a place for it to sleep. I am 33.5 weeks & furthest along in the class (apparently least prepared too).
We also only have about half of a house due to construction & no baby room, so there is that....

I called & they don't need anything from me beforehand. Just let them know at the hospital who the docs will be & whoever is on call will come check out the baby & meet us. Sounds good to me.
Dude, who are these people in your class? I'm 35w and I haven't installed the car seat yet or even taken it out of its box (we're planning to look at it this weekend).
And we *just* started talking about pediatricians. I got a recommendation from my midwife - I just called them and they are having a meet and greet next week so I'll go to that and assuming I don't get a horrible vibe from them, we'll go with them. I have no idea what questions to ask though.

Yup, I am here too. 34 weeks and our labor and delivery class is this weekend. Car seat and stroller are still in their boxes. I just found a pediatrician this week and will meet him at an open house in a few weeks but I really have no questions to ask either...lol.
I also have no idea about a birth plan and haven't read up too much on labor and delivery and breastfeeding.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm 37 weeks and just decided on a pediatrician this week. I'm also hoping to get the car seat installed this weekend - procrastination for the win!
Anyway, my OB gave me a long list of all the pediatricians they recommend. I asked which ones she thought were the most pro-vaccine, which narrowed it down to three practices. After checking to see if there were any bad reviews online, I just went with the closest one. I figure if I don't like the practice, I can always switch in the future.
Oh, and when I called, they didn't need any info from me at all - I just need to tell the hospital when I deliver what practice I plan on using, and the hospital will notify whichever ped is on call from there.

Ahh it is so much more sane here. In real life I feel so behind on everything because I've just been laid back & honestly construction has been our main focus. People are all asking what we need to do & how much we have left. Uhh everything?
My shower is tomorrow though so that will cross a lot of stuff off the lists. Crap can come out of the boxes eventually.
Do you want to feel better about yourself? My baby wasn't even born early, and I didn't have a pediatrician chosen even by the time I was pushing this baby out. I had to get on my insurance website on my iPad from the hospital bed so I could choose and make an appt before they'd let us leave.
MOTHER OF THE YEAR!
I live in the DC area, though, so we have a million options. I looked at some reviews online and cross referenced with who took my insurance. I have now been there twice, and I am happy so far.
Awesome. I was kind of planning on doing this too until the teacher was all freaked out. We live outside of DC too, but we live more rural and it is a haul to get to "town" if we were closer to a town it would open a lot more choices.
I had a complicated last trimester with my LO and had a million other things going on.
I did not interview pediatricians. This is my BIGGEST regret! I always had an issue with the pedi I initially picked while in the hospital and it was a major PITA to switch later on and $$$.
I just got a list of pediatricians from my OB at my 20-week appointment. In a couple of months, I'll do some Googling and ask friends if they have any recommendations. I probably will weigh the decision heavily on office hours and accessibility to my home. I do not plan to interview. I am not an anti-vaccine nutjob and have no strong feelings about other medical issues.
We just picked a pediatrician. My ob practice prefers (requires?) that you submit the name of your pedi when you pre-register with the hospital, and that way your pedi/a pedi from that practice can be the pedi to see your newborn before discharge. We picked based on online reviews, general practice info, and friendliness/helpfulness of office/staff.

This is me too. We have yet to take the car seat out of its box. And I've just begun doing some research on Yelp/HealthGrades.com/Vitals.com asked a few friends for recommendations.
I'm not planning on interviewing anyone. H's cousin gave me a recommendation for her kids' pediatrician that she loves, and she is very picky, so that is who I'm planning on using. I should probably call though and see if there is anything I have to do!
Another easy breezy checking in. First let me say that last week at our birthing class none of the 11 couples had picked pedis and some were further along than me. The instructor didn't even bat an eyelash.
I work at a high school, so I asked the school nurse who she has had good experiences with and who she knows is good. Got a list from her and some friends. H has HMO this year so we can avoid paying two huge deductibles (I am keeping my own ppo separately bc it's cheaper that way); I cross-referenced and not a single one of the recommended practices will take HMO.
I found one practice that's nearby and gets decent reviews. It's not who I'd choose for her, but I'm going to see if they are accepting new patients. If we like them, we'll keep with them. If not, I have no issues moving her to someone else once H can switch back to PPO next year. I was pretty underwhelmed with all of the choices, but it is what it is.

No worries. I'm having my baby on fri. And we don't have the crib or the car seat set up yet. It will all be done eventually.
You girls are making me feel better, I thought I was the only one behind I am 32 weeks, with no pediatrician. I plan on going off a friend's recommendation that just had a baby (also recommended by our OB). My birthing class is a one day class on February 12th. Hopefully this baby stays cooking past then so I'll have some idea what is going on. The nursery is primed, not painted or carpeted... But my stroller and car seat are set up.
