Linus was "just" intolerant and not allergic to milk. He ended up doing fine with cheese and yogurt, but just couldn't do whole milk. So with Fiona we gave milk based formula a shot and she's officially allergic. Anyone know with a history of intolerance and allergy if it's even worth trying milk based formula this time? Pedi said she'd just start straight with soy, but I haven't talked to the allergist yet. Just curious what people did with multiple kids with allergies!

DD#1 had a confirmed milk allergy but we got the clear to intro about 6 months ago because the tests came back negative. DD#2 is MSPI but we have not had any testing done. I cut dairy a few weeks before she was born and saw immediate consequences when I tried dairy when she was a week old. I think with the history I would be leery to try regular formula in your case. I would consider starting with an elemental formula for a few weeks and then gradually introduce regular to see if you notice a difference. If its a problem at least there won't be as much to clear out of her system. I still feel bad that H was miserable all those weeks until we figured out her issues.

I would recommend starting with whatever formula that worked before then going backwards for trials.
C had milk intolerance, he outgrew it by 20 months and could drink milk. He could do milk products at 18 months. He was on neocate then alimentium. R is milk intolerant (he tested negative to milk allergy by blood, have not done skin tests) still at almost 21 months. His intolerance is much stronger and he can not tolerate and milk products yet. We will be trialing him again before his birthday. He was on Neocate and now almond milk)
Our plan if we get pregnant again is for me to go dairy free at 35/6 weeks (both boys were born at 37 & 38 weeks) and then breastfeed for 2-4 weeks, until they start getting fussy/ I get frustrated with the diet, etc. and then move to elemental formula (neocate). Once the baby transitions well we will trial alimentium/nutramigen. If that goes well we will trial normal formula. Both my GI and pedi think any future children will be on the elemental formula.
FWIW I am a really good breastfeeder, but neither kid could tolerate the breast milk even on a milk free diet. I would love to get a month in but do not desire any cranky newborn situation so I am very willing to only breastfeed a short while. If my body was not so good, I would just skip it.

I've actually spoken to our GI and pedi about this. They both said that with Ari's severe MSPI it is almost guaranteed that baby #2 will have issues as well.
I know that you aren't planning on bfing but this is what I plan to do: go dairy free completely for the last 4 to 6 weeks. Then after a month or two slowly add dairy back in. I won't eliminate soy but if that is an obvious problem I would. If we ever have to supplement I plan on just using Nutramigen because that is what Ari was on and that's what worked for him. I won't even bother with regular formula until it was completely obvious that baby #2 could tolerate dairy products.

Chances are, all tge offspring will have the same issues. Edie was allergic, but I tried adeline on milk formula just in case. If I could avoid any estrogen/soy interactions, I wanted to. No such luck.

Soy. We did alimentun with edie and we were spending $350/mo on it. Ugh.
Thanks! I was just curious. I did soy with Linus and he was fine. Fiona was sensitive to soy and we did alimentum, but insurance covered it (after fighting for months). The kids are temporarily uninsured (long story) and even if/when we get coverage again it won't be covered. It's just soooo stinking expensive and with all of our new insurance drama I just wasn't planning on it. I guess that was the little bit of hope I still had that she could handle milk! I was fine with Linus, but all of the "soy is awful" talk makes me feel bad or like I'm trying to poison my kid!
