I did way too much. BUT I wanted to make sure stuff was still in stock/ if I needed to switch stuff between registries. Ish. That's what I told myself.
Eta- I didn't look at the giver though, so that was still a surprise at my shower. It was still fun!

Too much, I looked probably every day in the week preceding the shower date :-) Only half the guests at my first shower even touched the registry, and not until 2-3 days before. It seems everyone is a procrastinator!
So for my second shower 2 weeks after, I took a bunch of 'filler' stuff off so I can get the stuff we really need at this point. So I keep checking so I can add stuff back in as needed. At least that's the excuse I'm using, haha.
My invites went out a week or so ago. Shower is mid-Feb. ONE item has been purchased. I'm going crazy trying to figure out who would buy this random item! I know my close BFFs will probably go in together to buy a larger item (that's what we've done in the past) and I know most people haven't even thought to shop yet. It's probably my MIL, who despite buying our crib and a ton of other things, was stressing about what to buy for the shower!
I went to Babies R Us on Friday to buy a bunch of clearance stuff and they told me to add it my registry as they are doing a promotion where you'll receive a gift card with a % of every registry item that has been purchased. So, if you're heading over there, add anything you buy yourself to the registry.
Way too much, even after I told myself to stop so I could be surprised! My shower is today so yesterday I was particularly, um, vigilant.
One thing that didn't help is that Amazon sends you an email saying "someone bought you a gift off your registry!" Well then, of course, it made me run right over there. They also have their thank you list so you can see who it is. I tried not to look at that as often, but when someone bought something I was reallllllly excited to get, I'd always end up looking who it came from.
I was also the kid who used to snoop around the house looking for Christmas presents though. I love surprises, but if I have access to the info beforehand I can never be surprised and I always ruin it beforehand. I don't like suspense. I also used to look at the endings of books before I got to them. It's in my DNA to want to know before I'm supposed to!
I look at ours every few days. We're having a tiny shower though so I'm really not expecting much of it to get purchased. Mostly it's a list for us, and a way to get the completion discount for Amazon. But I'm pretty excited that someone got us an Ergo, and someone bought a crib mattress. I don't like the Thank You list on Amazon... it's bad enough that I can tell what was purchased, but knowing who bought it really takes all the surprise out of it. And I can't resist clicking it now that I know it's there. Shower is next weekend!
I check mine every few days, mostly to see if anything is on sale and if I should just go ahead and buy it. We already had our shower, so this is stuff leftover, and is mostly large items like breast pump, Ergo, stuff like that.
I stalked my wedding registry, so I'm sure I'll be the same way with the baby. Spin-off question: when did you guys register? I figured I wouldn't worry about it until my shower date was set, but it seems like people register much earlier than that? My shower will probably be when I'm around 30ish-35ish weeks.

We did about a week or two before Christmas, so I guess I was probably around 28 weeks? My parents and my in-laws bought stuff right away, but most of the items were purchased in the last week.

This post inspired me to check. My first shower isn't until March 9 and my other one won't be until 4-6 weeks after baby boy makes his arrival. Only one thing has been purchased so far but it's our pack and play so that is exciting!

We registered in the stores about 25 weeks? Since then, I've tweaked it and added stuff online. Mostly, after we decided what we wanted for the main stuff, I wanted to add it so I wouldn't forget.
i'm not this far yet, but it was so hard to resist the temptation for our wedding registry. for that i avoided looking before our showers but i made DH check all the time, haha. he wouldn't tell me anything specific, just that 'a few things were bought' or 'one of the big things was bought'. it was nice to have him check too to see if we needed to add additional items, etc. i was proud of myself for not looking at them since it was so tempting. i did check in the weeks before the wedding though. i guess that was my compromise, be surprised at the showers since people had to watch me open things but didn't need to be surprised at the wedding since we didn't open gifts in front of people. for a baby registry i will probably get DH to do the checking like before.
See, I guess I don't really understand what the big deal is about knowing what people bought you. I don't get why some people think it's "bad" or "naughty" to see what things have been purchased from your registry. Not every gift needs to be a surprise.

I've had people ask me what's been purchased so far, haha. So I think it's expected that you'll keep an eye on it when it's so easy to do now. I feel a little greedy because I check it so often out of curiosity. But otherwise have no shame!

We plan to start after we find out the sex. I have a private Amazon wish list started where I'm storing all the items I've read reviews on (mainly via Lucie's List and Baby Bargains). That way it'll be easy to whittle it down and make a registry when we're ready.

I also had a private amazon registry to make a master list & keep track of reviews. Then after our 20 week ultrasound we did a BRU registry and made the rest of the stuff public on amazon.
