Just sitting in a hotel lobby and there's a random interview going on that I can overhear. It was as awkward as I imagined. The interviewer's answer was "well, you're still here after an hour, so…"
"What would you suggest I do between now and the next step in the interview process to prepare? (Maybe this is presumptuous, but I like to think I will be moving on)"?
He's like "just whatever research you would normally do…"

Eeeeek.
I'm totally down with the "do you have any concerns about my candidacy that I can address at this time?" question as the interview is winding down, but the "how do I stack up" question seems to me a bridge too far.

I totally agree with this. You're essentially asking for feedback on other candidates vs. keeping the focus on your fit for the position. Not a good strategy.
To me that would signal a needy employee who couldn't work or make decisions independently. "How am I doing? How about now? Am I doing better than everyone else? Am I doing this right? Should I do it another way? How should I do it?" Goodbye.
