They might take it back as a courtesy, but that isn't something it would occur to me to do. If I bought a new food for myself to try and I didn't like it, I wouldn't try to return the rest of it.
Walmart did allow me to return it because I had my receipt. Otherwise they wouldn't know if it had come from the WIC office or not. It had to be within a certain number of days but since I just got it on the 24th it was no problem. Thankful I could return it since it wasn't working for baby and formula isn't cheap. I was willing to donate if they hadn't taken it back but sure glad they did. Also SAMs follows same procedure at least local to me. Me not liking a food is a little different than a baby not tolerating a formula at least to me, maybe I'm wrong.

Well it's different I agree, but not a problem that Walmart needs to be on the hook for, IMHO. If you had a bad reaction to an antibiotic would you ask CVS for your money back?

Walmart takes everything back. I remember someone saying here that even unopened formula that is returned is thrown out. Makes sense but I just didn't know that.
Eta: We had this happen before and I just threw it out. Food that is bad I would return but not for this reason.

I'm glad for you that they took it back. I personally wouldn't even have thought to do that...an unopened can, sure, but an opened one? No different IMO than me buying a product that I didn't like/didn't agree with me. You write it off to lessons learned and don't buy it again.
And FWIW, my older DD did have reactions to lactose based formula. I just tossed the rest of the unopened can and went out to buy the soy stuff our ped recommended. Part of the cost of doing business with kids.
This seems so bizarre to me. It isn't like returning a pair of shoes that they can sell to another customer. If there was something wrong with it (like it was expired) that would be one thing, but I would have just chalked this up to the things you learn being a mom.
For the record, E has been on not less than 8 different formulas while I tired to find one that worked for him. It's not the stores fault that he has a weird tummy.
