That's so scary! I had a P.E. in 2007, which was missed the first time I went to the E.R. (I passed out from lack of oxygen). Glad they caught yours right away!
How scary! Glad they found it quickly. I had one near my liver which wasn't diagnosed correctly for about a week. Painful and so, so scary for you. And yes, there was that same you have a clot you're staying in the hospital (and not a lot of extra info).
Like PP said, they can be caused by birth control - and also pregnancy! Because of my past clot history and some other factors I had to take a blood thinner throughout my pregnancy. I was on Lovenox through my PG and PP and was able to nurse my baby.
Wishing you a quick recovery and feel free to message me for another BTDT!
Re: how you got it- Not to scare you because it looks like you are already over the hump, but my 35 year old cousin died of a pulmonary embolism that was not caught in time. In our family we have a blood clotting disorder called Lyden Factor V. You can be tested for this and take extra precautions. I would also stop any hormonal birth control, make sure you follow your doctors advice to prevent more blood clots.
Thanks ladies. It has been scary but what scares me the most is how normal I feel. It just hurt a little, more discomfort then anything except for one twinge that was sharper. I almost didn't call 911.
Fwiw, I haven't been on BC in 8 years. I have never smoked. I haven't been on a plane in 2 years. I haven't even been on a road trip in 6 months. No family history of clots. We have absolutely no idea what caused this. And that scares me too. The hematologist did say we can test for genetic factors but said we'd wait until I'm off of blood thinners.
I'm on warfarin and lovenox now but they are switching me to xarelto. Any experience with that?
I'm so glad they caught it, and that you went in. My dad had 2, misdiagnosed as pneumonia for 2 weeks. It's a miracle he's alive. He's on Coumadin for life. He tests out at high normal for one clotting factor, which may have contributed.

I was on Heparin in the hospital, and then on Lovenox after I was discharged home. I don't think Xarelto was on the market when I had my P.E.

That is so scary! So glad you got to the ER in time. Xarelto works similarly to Coumadin, but you don't have to have the blood monitoring like you do with Coumadin. I'm also pretty sure you don't have to watch your diet either. I have never taken a blood thinner, but have given it to patients at work. Hope you're back to feeling better really soon!
My Dad is on Xarelto. It's nice like PP said, no monitoring......but the generic doesn't seem to be as good (he has issues with it) so insist on brand name when you get home. Hope it clears up and you get home soon.
