My husband and I are taking DD to Scotland and London at the end of March. We will be spending 4 days in Edinburgh and 5 days in London. My original plan was to take the Ergo and rent a stroller in London only. I'm now second guessing myself. She will be a year old when we travel. I can buy a nice stroller for a little more than I can rent the one in London only. Should we gate check a stroller so I can use it in both locations? If we do that, should I buy an umbrella stroller or a nicer one? I worry about getting frustrated with an umbrella stroller since I'm unsure of the terrain. Thanks in advance!
Buy a stroller that you don't mind lifting up and down stairs, since many of the tube stations do not have lifts and you will have to carry it up and down to the platform. You also don't want a huge one if you take the bus (there is a spot at the front of the bus for strollers), or a taxi. If you can do a mixture of wearing her and using the stroller I would get an umbrella stroller. My son was born in London and we have a bugaboo but I walked all day every day and needed a heavy duty stroller. For 5 days I think you are fine with an umbrella stroller. We have traveled to many places in Europe with a Maclaren and it has been great. I wouldn't go cheap though because it is a pain to have a stroller with low handlebars and you want relatively strong wheels.
Get an umbrella stroller. My SIL had a BOB, or something like it, for my niece and nephew and it was a beast. IMO you need something small and easily collapsible.
eta - My SIL lives in London. Important bit of info I missed.
Just saw this - I live in Edinburgh. It really depends on how you normally get around and how comfortable you are carrying her PLUS a stroller in different situations. I have 2 I use regularly -
My advice... Lightweight but with decent wheels as there are a lot of cobblestones. A lot. I wouldn't be able to carry my daughter around all day while sightseeing for sure - what about when she needs to nap? Do you not have a stroller at home?
I know of a baby items rental place in Edinburgh if you decide to go the rental route.
Feel free to page me if you want any more Edinburgh / Edinburgh with a toddler advice :-)

We went to Paris and London when our son was 11 months old. We spent four days in each city. We purchased a Chicco Liteway, which is an umbrella stroller. I also brought our Ergo. Between the two we were good. We used the underground a lot in London and had no issues but my husband often carried the front of the stroller while I carried the back because most of the stops did not have elevators. I would recommend a stroller and a baby wearing contraption of some sort. It will be the best of both worlds.
I agree with the recommendations of an umbrella stroller if you need one. I would probably just plan to wear baby most of the time though, since it's easier to move through busy areas.
