She's been breathing deeply and a little quicker than usual the past couple of days. It's hard to really tell when it started because she was so junky from the c section and they breathe so funny as newborns anyway.
We took her to the pedi and she agreed her breathing wasn't normal, but said her lungs sounded clear and she didn't seem distressed. She heard a heart murmur which was a little concerning because she had a murmur in the hospital that went away (apparently a normal closing of something in the heart that's open in all fetuses). And that closed in the hospital and was still closed at her 1 week check. So this is apparently a different one. I know it can still be no big deal though but we have to get an echo.
We had an X-ray done and are waiting for her to call tonight with results. She said to take her to the er if she gets worse, but it makes me so uncomfortable with the way she's breathing. I hate to take her into the flu ridden hospital though if not 100% necessary if they would just say the same thing and send me home. She's retracting under her ribs and above her collarbone. I won't be sleeping tonight...
Praying for Ruby! Was she retracting at the last check or is that new?
its new as far as I know. I mean, I Assumed the pedi would have noticed it?? I feel so stupid when they're asking me when it started because I really don't know. It seems like it just kind of blended in with the weird c section breathing.
I hope she's okay. Do you have a pediatric ER near you?
i do. Our local hospital has peds and we're about 1/2 hr away from Riley children's hospital in Indy.
That's good to hear. Hopefully you won't need to go to the ER, but I always feel better when there's a pediatric hospital nearby. The doctors will be used to tiny babies.
Thanks everyone. It just makes me so antsy because my sister is a nurse at Riley and keeps asking me if they checked all this stuff (o2, blood pressure, temp, etc) and they didn't, but the dr tells me she's concerned about her breathing...
That stinks so much. It's so scary. I hope ruby feels better soon! We just had our 11 week old in the hospital for breathing issues this week. Our doctor said the things to look for were his head bobbing up and down while he breathes, his sides sucking in when he's breathing and lots if grunting noises. Sorry you are dealing with this!
Good thoughts ! To be honest, if you aren't sure if she was retracting when the pedi checked I would call the after hours number /on call dr to ask. I have several friends whose little guys have various forms of breathing issues - some minor some major - and I know that when you see the retraction is when you want to do something.

no, she's definitely retracting today. There's no doubt about that. Her sides and neck are. I just wasn't sure if she was retracting at the 1 week appt.
I hate to say this, but if she's having substantial retractions, I would really think about taking her in. That was one if the signs my doctor was pretty serious about and she is even younger than my little guy. I'm so, so sorry you are dealing with this!
