If you use a shellac or gel base and top coat with regular nail polish, what's your method? Seems simple enough, but do you "cure" the regular nail polish in the light?

I use Gelous top coat (green top) from Sally's Beauty. I do my regular polish (2 coats) and let it dry for a few mintues before applying the Gel coat. It doesn't require a light. It takes a bit to dry but it really makes my regular polish last longer.

Me too! I love that stuff. I use one coat regular polish, one coat Gelous, and repeat for 2 coats of color, one coat of top coat, then a last coat of Gelous. Works wonderfully, and lasts a week, even though I am really hard on my hands.
I'm hard on my hands too. Between being a mom to a toddler and working in the medical field, they see a lot of beating.

I use regular base coat and polish with a cured gel top coat. Lasts as long as all layers cured gel, but easier on my nails and MUCH, MUCH easier to remove.

How long do you let the regular polish dry before doing a light cured gel top coat?

It should be dry. You can go ahead and do it right away, but it works best when they are totally hard-dry. I like to do the regular base and polish, then let them dry a few hours while I do paperwork, then do the clear gel and cure. I've done it both ways, but the gel seems to seal the polish underneath and if it's not totally dry, kind of prevents it from drying completely. So if you apply it too fast, you might have adhesion problems with the top coat. That has happened *sometimes* like around the edges, but most of the time it's fine.
