I made one for DS's room - it's not fancy at all. I bought a large wall map from Office MAX ($4) and then a framed cork board from there too ($~25). I used modge-podge to glue the map to the cork board and hung it in his room.
he has tacks in one color for where he's been and in another color for where he wants to go. (there are a lot of those... )
I got a National Geographic one, framed, for Christmas. I love it. I'll try to find a link to it somewhere...
We got this one last year. We get SO many compliments...it hangs in our den and everyone who comes over asks about it. I ordered it off of the Nat Geo website.

Why does the NatGeo site require you to sign up for an account just to browse their website? Annoying.
Hm I didn't remember that. I get the magazine so I must have an account through that? I do get a ton of emails from them.
We bought this one. I was going to make one but then I saw this one and thought it was too nice to pass up, even though it's a bit pricey. I like that i's magnetic vs. push pin so it stays looking nice and doesn't tear like our last one ended up doing.

If you did want to make one, you could buy the map (rand mcnally), buy a nice frame, and buy some magnetic paint. I saw all three on amazon and ebay.
Oh I like! The only down side is that it sounds heavy at 36 pounds.
Do you use the magnets that came with it or have you found others you like? I'd ideally like ones in red (me), blue (DH), and purple (both) for ours
It's a bit heavy but not too bad.
Cute idea for the pins! I use the ones that came with it. I looked everywhere for others but didn't have any luck. My mom suggested going to a teacher's supply store for different colors.
Then we bought the frontgate map after seeing a friend's. Such a nice, high quality map. They do kind of screw you on the pins - especially if you've traveled a lot. I solved the problem of not enough pins in the colors I wanted with spray paint.
Oh, good idea re: spray paint if I get desperate! And thanks for telling me what to avoid, too; just as helpful.
I've seen colored tiny magnets at the Container Store. They had a variety of colors. This was at least a year ago though.
DH got me a National Geographic one that's 4' x 6' for Christmas. I mounted it on 1" rigid styrofoam insulation - lightweight, cheap, and easy for pushpins. I've been meaning to AW a picture of how it turned out.
I just bought a big Rand McNally world map at Borders (it was like $10) and put it on a big bulletin board. I think it looks great and I can use any pins we want.
