We had some TTC our first. We tried for a bit over a year before talking to my gyno and my husband's urologist. We went through all the standard tests sometime between Sept 2011-January-2012. I had an HSG (clear) and my husband 3 different sperm samples. I can't remember the terminology at this point, but his volume/amount was fine, but his motility and morphology were close to 0%. After we got the news about his 3rd sample, his urologist said we needed to go see a fertility dr. At some point in there, I miraculously got pregnant. Great! The urologist and my gyno were blown away.
When we met with the urologist for the last time, he mentioned once we were ready to try for our second, to let him know and he would immediately refer us to a RE and that IVF would likely be our best option. I talked to a friend the other day who has gone through several rounds of IVF and she said that the tests expire and that we'd have to go through them all over again for insurance purposes. It's been about 2 years since we had any tests done. I figured that my husband would at least have to have a few more sperm analyses done, but I didn't think I would need another HSG. Did anyone have to do this?
We think we would like to try around August/September this year. At what point should we start getting in contact with his urologist and getting referred to an RE and start making appointments? I know that a IVF cycle is around 2 months....
My RE wanted the HSG and other tests within 6 months of starting the IVF.
I would probably contact them soon, since it might take a while to actually be able to get in for appointments.
Good luck!
Thanks! The other thing is that we're not 100% sure about when we want to start, so I hate to start the testing soon, and then decide in a few months that we want to hold off for another year.

We didn't do IVF, but IUI+injectibles for our twins. When we went to TTC #3 about 2.5 years later, the RE wanted to repeat all the tests, in case having the baby changed things around. No use in doing any cycles if your tubes are now blocked or something like that. It took about 2 months to get all the testing done before we started cycling again (although we didn't get a BFP from those cycles...I got a surprise BFP during an off month).
A lot can happen with your tubes during/after a pregnancy. It would be strange NOT to have an HSG done again if you've been pregnant since the last time you had one done. I know quite a few people who had blockages/scar tissue resulting from their first pregnancies. I would want another one just in case.

Yea, you're right. I never really thought of it like that.
This may be a stupid question, but if your known issue is MFI, and you are therefore going directly to IVF, is there really a need for another HSG? Mine was awful, so if there was a chance I could get out of doing it again, I would take it, lol.
That was actually my thinking when I wrote this post. Maybe I am stupid too though. If you have a blocked tube, does the procedure they do for IVF change at all? Mine was definitely uncomfortable, and caused a lot of cramping, but it was tolerable.
I had to repeat my sonohyst before my 4th round of IVF, but I have never had to have an HSG. We also had MFI and, it turned out, an egg quality issue, but no tube issues.
