DD is a little over 5 months old and formula does not keep her full anymore. She will go through six or eight 6 ounce bottles a day, sometimes back to back.
I've been trying to do cereal for a while and I'm so frustrated with it. She does not seem to like it. She doesn't like it plain, with fruit, thin, or thick. No matter how I do it, she gags on it or just spits it out. She seems to like the actual fruit ok, but not the cereal.
I think her and I are both beyond frustrating with trying to do cereal. It just gets all over. She squirms around and just spits it out. Last night resulted in a full on meltdown because I gave her the cereal. She did ok with two bites, but the third was apparently the end all. I've tried giving her a sip of formula every couple of bites, which seems to help for a teensy bit.
I think she needs more. I need to make an appointment with her doctor, but our medical insurance doesn't kick in until March 1. Should I just stick to giving her pureed foods and not bother with cereal? Will those fill her up and give her nutrients? I bought four huge containers of formula about a month ago...maybe even more like 3 weeks and they are all completely gone.
The pedi said she couldn't give advice without seeing her. I think we've definitely hit another growth spurt. She seems to like the purees, which is why I was thinking we might ignore the cereal and do purees.

From what I know, there is a typical growth spurt at around 6 months. My DD has hit all her growth spurts early so far so maybe your DD is the same? If so, I would keep trying different foods just for fun and not force the cereal but just go with it in terms of the formula amounts and hope that if it's a spurt, she won't go through all that formula much longer.
Cereal isn't meant to be nutritional, it's to get kids used to textures. A lot of people skip it altogether.
I can't remember how much formula DD had at that age, but I can guess it was a lot. I agree, probably a growth spurt, and just ride the wave until things settle down. You can try introducing other solids at this point if you want. My babe didn't like avocadoes ::pout::

We never tried giving him straight rice cereal (I made me nauseous just looking at it); we tried giving baby oatmeal and he wasn't a fan. So we just used it to thicken very loose purees.
My baby liked oats (but she ended up allergic) ok. With rice or wheat I just mixed with fruit & she'd eat it. She didn't love solids in general though until she was 8-9months old.
