I just got a jury summons for 3/10...18 days after my due date. Obviously I will need to reschedule/defer but if they ask me for another date, what do you guys think is reasonable? 3 months down the road? 6 months?
My husband just went through the rescheduling process with them a couple of months ago after they assigned him on a date when he had a business trip planned. They rescheduled him for a month later, which clearly would not be enough time in my situation...I would need to leave the baby with someone for the day (potentially longer if I actually got picked) so I would need enough time to have a pumping routine, etc established....
Ugh. What shitty timing. I have never been called for jury duty before and I actually don't mind doing it, but would really rather not do it with a brand new baby in the house!
@mnh2013 - I don't know, I guess I'll find out when I call! The notice does say that "Primary caregiver of a child under the age of 6" is an accepted reason for deferral, but I don't know if that means indefinite deferral or just until a more convenient time when you can find child care or whatever.
We don't have any child care lined up since I won't be working for a while, and without any family in town I guess I'd need to find a sitter.
I got a jury summons when DD was about 6 months old. Our jurisdiction's rules allowed you to defer for a year after a child's birth. I would call and find out the court's rules on deferment.
I got this when M was 4 or 5 months old. They wouldn't let me use her as a reason to defer. I was back at work so we had childcare. Fortunately I didn't get called in. I didn't want to figure out the logistics of having to pump there.

Ugh, I didn't even think about that. Another reason why this would be easier with an older baby!
Definitely ask for the deferral and see what they can do. If worse comes to worst, chain daycares sometimes have "drop in" programs so you can just pay for a day or a week.
My guess is that they'll just put your name back into the lottery and not worry about rescheduling you.

So I called, and the guy I spoke to just said: "Oh no problem, we'll just mark you as excused." I asked if I needed to do anything else and he said no. This seems too good to be true! LOL.
Wow that's great! I just got jury duty summons for next week and am not looking forward to it. People keep telling me to try to get deferred because I'm pregnant but (a) I doubt that would fly and (b) the last thing I want to have happen is to get summoned again when I have a baby to care for.

I would definitely get it over with now! Then you'll be out of the pool for a little while, at least I think that's how it usually works.
