We have a mix. A coworker said her son's speech therapist say that the sippies with hard plastic may cause some speech problems. Her twins will only get straw sippies. DS loves his Camelback!

Which straw cup (for the millionth time) do you all like? Preferably one that doesn't spill? DD is 7 months going on 7 and likes to hold her cup alone.

Isn't it better for their teeth too? I just got the platex one and she loves it. We had been using the regular kind and she didn't seem to drink much. She got the straw right away and is drinking. I plan to stick with the straws.
The issue with sippies and speech development has to do with tongue placement when drinking. With sippies, the tongue is more forward in the mouth whereas when you drink from a straw your tongue is more posterior. So if a kid drinks from a sippy a ton, their tongue may take a more forward position in the mouth naturally and thus affect their ability to say certain sounds.
But. BUUUUT. If your kid drinks from a sippy, you do NOT need to freak out and throw away all the sippy cups. The evidence behind this theory is pretty nonexistent, it's just one of those things that if you're familiar with tongue position when drinking from a sippy vs. straw cup it makes sense. You are not condemning your kid to a life of lisping. What I tell parents of my current patients who ask me about it, or friends who ask, is if you can get your kid to drink from a straw cup then great. If they're not having it, try to get them to drink from an open cup sometimes (with as much supervision as you think they need so they don't spill everydamnwhere) and otherwise let them have the damn sippy. Just don't let them walk around with it in their mouths 24-7, and they should be just fine.
We started with water around 7 months in a Platex Lil' Gripper. You can "help" LO learn how to use the straw. Worked great with DS. We moved up to the Nuby Flip 'N Sip at about 10 months, and he still uses it at 23 months. He knows how to drink from a open cup, he just likes to tip the whole cup onto the floor ninja-fast.

Neither of my boys are very good with the tilting back of the dippy on their own right away (DS1 finally got the hang of it at like 2). So they both use straw cups much more often than sippy cups. But both are in rotation.

DD is the opposite. She tilts the straw cup to drink and when that runs out, she tilts it more! We have to hold it down for her.
We didn't get the squeezable straw cup, but the first couple of times, I put a straw in a sandwich ziplock bag and squeezed the bag when she drank from it.After that we moved to normal straw cups and she drinks it fine.
