My ped was asking about Chubbabubba's sleep. Which is horrendous. She said she never could use the crib with her kids, she would put the mattress on the floor and surround it with pillows. She asked me if he flops around all night -- yes. She asked if he's hitting his head on the bars, and curls up in the corner -- yes. She suggested sticking pillows in the corners of the crib for him to curl against, because he wants that comfort.
I would love to do this but ALLLLL the months of SIDS warning readings makes me super nervous. Kid is already pulling up, though, can this really still be unsafe? Would you guys do this with a nine month old? Guide me, mmm!
Haha...I should have clarified. What she did with her kids (aka the montessori bed) sounds smart and not unsafe to me. It's suggestions #2 that I'm curious about.
My kid sleeps in a PNP with a mattress -- no hard crib rails to hit against. Honestly, I don't know why somebody doesn't make a full-sized mesh-sided crib. Seems like it would solve a lot of problems with bumpers, railings, etc.
I'd consider an actual bumper at that age, honestly. Nine months is probably the youngest end of when I'd be comfortable with it, but I think a bumper would be safer than pillows just tossed in, you know?

Hahahahaha this is my kid every morning in his travel crib as we try to get ready for work.

B is just on his mattress on the floor but he's used a Moon pillow since he was 4ish months. Every now and then he will somehow be holding the Moon pillow instead of sleeping on it which perplexes me but it's firm and not a choking hazard as far as I can tell. He had fallen out of bed a few times but he's been fine. I find him laying on the floor babbling. At day care he always grabs the bars of the crib and that frankly makes me worried. But I'm admittedly pretty weird about this issue.

DS2 is a head-banger in his crib. He gets up on all fours and rocks/bangs his head into the crib rails until he falls asleep. And will randomly do it in the MOTN as well to fall back asleep. It's his insane way of self-soothing.
Out of desperation we put a very flat pillow in between the breathable bumper and the rail and that didn't stop him. He just moved to the other end of the crib and kept banging away.
He's 18, almost 19 months now and just slowly growing out of it with a little help from me. I now stay in his room at bedtime and lean over the crib and rub his head, lay him back down, etc if he tries to head-bang.
I wasn't willing to do a floor bed since he's got a ton of toys in his room and I don't trust him to not be contained yet.
No, I wouldn't be comfortable with that. My dd2 is also a crib corner sleeper. We have a breathable bumper. That plus a lovey is as far as I'd personally go.
Also, SIDS =\= suffocation, so even though the SIDS risk is mostly gone, it doesn't mean that bad stuff can't still happen.
We had a regular bumper at that age, and a pillow after 1. I would feel comfortable with a regular bumper. But we were bad parents and did a regular bumper pretty early on.
