Our super old linksys went kaput. I bought a netgear but after talking to tech support for wired issues with our tv, satellite and receiver the lady said they only did support for computers.
So what does mm recommend? We have 2 laptops, iPhone, tv, blu ray, directv and our onkyo system that all need to run off it.
Are you asking for advice on what to buy or how to set it up? I think most routers in theory will work with most wireless equipment, but unfortunately they are pretty unreliable. We have had problems where we had to revert to the most basic router drivers and then build our way back up to get everything to work - the router's tech support should be able to help you with that, at least. Driver problems could theoretically impair both wired and wireless operation, but the first thing I would try is to see if your laptop will run off of each wired port you want to use to make sure it's not a hardware problem.
Make sure it's wireless b/g/n and it should work with most devices. Cisco (just straight cisco, not linksys) and HP printers are notorious for compatibility issues with eachother. As long as you have a different brand of printer though, cisco is a great brand.
Netgear normally is good too, but yeah, it's common for tech support to only troubleshoot computers. Dlink, and Linkysys are generally the big names. We've personally had good luck with our cheapy trendnet router.
Since this is basically my dayjob, I've got a couple troubleshooting questions for you:
Are your devices seeing the wireless signal at all? What happens when you try to connect to the signal?
- did you try to connect your other devices before or after you set up wireless security? If it was after, try unsecuring the wireless signal temporarily, and see if that works. If so, the devices may be incompatible with the security type set up. I see this most frequently when WPS is enabled, or with WPA2-PSK. Try setting up regular WPA-PSK or, as a last resort, WEP (older standard that's easier to hack).
The next best step would be to call tech support for each of your other devices and find out if they know any tricks or are aware of compatibility problems.
I went ahead and returned the netgear and bought another cisco/linksys. Hooked up the wireless and the wired devices with no issue. So I'm not sure if it was a netgear issue or not.
