I dumped an entire container of blueberries on my kitchen floor this morning.
I normally clean house once a week but ironically it has been 3 weeks since I fully cleaned so the floor hasn't been mopped in that time. We don't wear shoes in the house but we have 2 dogs and I can't guarantee that we haven't worn flip flops in the kitchen when running something in.
I rinsed them off but I want to either truly clean them or dump them. What would you do? If you say clean them, how? It's not worth it to me to run to the store and buy a special product so I'm hoping soap or vinegar?
I say eat them. Unless you dumped them onto something knowingly dirty, I would think they would be fine. If it were me, I would soak in some veggie cleaner + water for a minute or two but even without that I would eat it.
Rinse in cold water and then absolutely. Your floor can't be any worse than the other things they've been exposed to before they got to your apartment.
This is kind of what I was thinking as I cleaned them. Goodness knows where they were before my house but I bet it involved pesticides and possibly unclean people.
They fell right in front of the fridge so I'm sure there are crumbs, dog hair, dirt, etc in that spot - it is pretty high traffic. I know they won't kill me but I'm a little grossed out, haha. My house itself is grossing me out today, I NEVER go this long without cleaning!

I have done this more than once, I'm sad to say. And with the huge blueberry containers from Costco.
I can guarantee you my floors are dirtier than yours, and I just pick them up, rinse them really well, then eat them. The ones that have dog hair get thrown away, but the rest are fine. I wouldn't serve them to guests, but my two year old regularly eats food off of the floor before I can stop her, and she's healthy as a horse :-)
Also, I'm totally going to make "dirt won't hurt" my motto when surrounded by all these yuppie moms who are terrified of their kids being exposed to a bit of dirt and side eye me when I don't make my child bathe in antibacterial gel before eating!
my dogs aren't allowed in the kitchen, so I'd rinse them off and eat them
however, since your dogs are allowed in the kitchen, and the floor hasn't been cleaned in awhile, I would trash them. If your dogs have been outside, their feet have brought in whatever they have stepped in.
I'm not a germphobe and I don't think you'd get sick , but I think it's a little gross and I'd lose my apetite for the berries.
I'd rinse them and eat them, but if that sounds gross to you, blueberry pancakes are rather fantastic. (You can freeze them and reheat them for a MM breakfast too!)
Ack...why couldn't it have been an apple? Then I would definitely say yes. Even a bunch of grapes together, yes. I don't know about blueberries. I just don't know...
Ditto this. And that's weird, I don't know why an apple wouldn't bother me but blueberries do. I'd probably throw them away. Sad.
Wow I drop a LOT on the floor and still eat it. Guess I'm cheap. But why do you think your kitchen floor is worse than things they got on them previous to the grocery store?
We have wild blueberries on our land sooooo yeah. haha.
Thanks guys! I ended up rinsing them and then soaking them in water and a bit of vinegar. I think they are ok and I just won't tell DH lol.
I usually have higher standards of cleanliness for my house but it's been a busy summer and my floor was much dirtier than I'm usually ok with. I think if it was a normal week it wouldn't have grossed me out as much, ha.
I spent a few hours this afternoon cleaning and now I would happily eat right off the floor!
Team rinse-and-eat, or maybe don't-bother-to-rinse-and-eat. And I don't clean my kitchen floors weekly, either. With soaking in water and vinegar, I'm sure you'll be fine.
