It's a medical term. Considering women can technically start reproducing as pre-teens we are certainly at the other end of the spectrum. It's a classification so they can develop your medical care appropriately.
There are a lot of terms in medicine that are also used in common terms (that sometimes shouldn't be). For instance, if a patient isn't eating, they will be described as having anorexia. The actual eating disorder we are familiar with is called "Anorexia nervosa".

Yeah, medical terminology sucks donkey balls sometimes. I'm 34 too, and it kills me that if I want another baby after this one that I'll be AMA (advanced maternal age).

It's like a miscarriage being a spontaneous abortion. I think it is an old term. MIL says she remembers crying at the ER in the early 80s when some nurse came to ask for her yelling "It's for the abortion?".
These posts have me laughing outloud--I totally agree! This medical language is BS and makes us sound defective. My personal favorites are "incompetent cervix" and "an unremarkable ultrasound exam".
