How do you do sleeping arrangements in hotels if you have 2 (or more) kids who are too big for a crib/PNP but not big enough to trust in a rail-less bed? Do you just put them in a double bed and hope they don't fall out? I don't like the idea of them sleeping on the floor but I'm worried about them breaking a limb in the middle of the night.
Are you flying or driving? If you are driving can you bring pool noodles to put under the sheets so they can't roll off? If not you could roll up towels and do the same thing. Or place pillows all around the bed on the floor in case they fall out. We have just put them in the bed and hedged our bets

both flying and driving. We haven't slept in a hotel since my kids outgrew PNPs and I just realized I don't know how to travel with them anymore. We might move overseas so I'm just thinking ahead because we'll travel a lot over there.

How old are they? We travel a lot with our kids (just turned 6 and almost 3) and actually still put the almost 3 year old in a PNP but will probably be outgrowing that soon. We did a floor bed with our son for a long time.

they're 3.5 right now. Is a floor bed something you ask for at a hotel or did you bring something?
Oh we would just make one, if we were driving we would bring blankets but if we flew we just asked for extra blankets and made one on the floor. I would bet at 3.5 (and older) they will be okay in a regular bed. Hotel beds aren't that tall usually either.

When in hotels/vacations in general, she is between us because she doesn't sleep in the crib/PNP provided to us. For naps, she's in bed by herself surrounded by all the pillows we find. fwiw she's 2 1/2 now.
We bring a child-sized air mattress, or just use lots of pillows against the edge. Sometimes we've split up, and one of us will sleep with one child and the other alone (or now, sometimes with DS if he doesn't want the PNP).

DD is 5.5 and DS is 2.5 now but he is ok to sleep in a big bed now. We usually have them share a bed. We do have an inflatable bed rail that we can bring and put under the sheet so he doesn't roll off the bed.

DD slept in her travel crib until she was 3 y4 m. Our next trip was a month later and she slept in a bed for the first time ever at the hotel. The first night we put some pillows on the edges but she pretty much slept sideways anyway so we didn't worry about it anymore. For Xmas she got a really nice pottery barn sleeping bag from her BFF and she slept in that the couple of times that we didn't have an extra bed. We spent two nights in Vegas where we didn't have two beds (and forgot) and she just slept on the floor with a couple of blankets and was totally fine. This fall when we go see my family in Europe we will bring her sleeping bag (probably as carry on) because at my parent's and my sister's there is only one bed available and we will be sleeping in that . And at my parent's it is so freaking cold at night that it will be nice to have a warm sleeping bag!

We either have two beds and each sleep with one kid with pillows on the other side, or we pull the mattress onto the floor, or we just let them sleep in a bed and put pillows on the floor. Beds in Germany are really pretty low and we're often in hotels here.
This is what we have. We once tried to move the mattress to the floor but the stuff we found under the mattress grossed me out so much that I haven't done it since! And this was in a really nice hotel!
For our latest trip my 3.5 year old slept in the bed by himself without rails and did fine. If the bed is large enough I feel better about it. Also, rather than placing the pillows on the bed next to him we placed them on the floor just in case he rolled off.
ETA: We also have the Baby Bjorn travel crib which is one of the best baby items we purchased. It has minimal padding and kind of rests on the floor so it works for older and younger kids. It works up to age 4 or 5 I believe. The problem is that they are pricey and although they are extremely light (and very easy to set up--see the website for demonstrations), they count as an extra checked bag. Plus we didn't want to buy two so our youngest (1.5 year old) sleeps there and we still have to figure out what to do for the older one.

We have flown a lot and have the BB crib and loved it. We have always been able to check it as a baby item. Only once did they give us a problem and it ended up being resolved in our favor. It was always the only baby item we had though. I loved that crib. We definitely got our money worth since we used it from 6 weeks to 3.5 years. We would've used it longer except that DD really got cramped in there towards the end. She is no giant (50%) so I think 4-5 is pushing it length/height wise.

I never even though to ask! This is great info, thank you!!

This depends on the airline. Some airlines only allow you one baby item, and it has to be a stroller or car seat. Some allow you both. Some will let you count a travel crib. Definitely ask!

I should say we only move the mattress when we get a rollaway bed or something that's temporary and is likely moved more frequently. We don't move the regular beds. And we've never been charged for a pack n play using Delta and Lufthansa. Even with my parents traveling on Delta to bring us a pack n play, without traveling with a kid, weren't charged on Delta. But it's always good to ask.
